Hello,
My mother is from Glasgow and was evacuated to Canada during the summer of 1940 when she was 10 years old. Before the voyage she and the other evacuee children were put up at a school in Glasgow for several days; I believe the school was Albert Road. I would love to hear from anyone who knows about this school during that time, and from any evacuees who stayed at the school. Thank you!

Hello Jane b

I have just recently found this website, hence the 3 years lapse in this response.

I was evacuated to Canada in 1940. I didn't go via Albert Road school. I recently started making enquiries about my evacuation trip. I have discovered a book entitled, The Absurd And The Brave. It was written by Michael Fethney, himself an evacuee.

In his book he lists every ship that took part in the evacuation scheme and lists every evacuee who left these shores, including those unfortunate children who never made it across the ocean. Your mother will be listed.

I also learned that the civilian escorts who accompanied us were required to return home. Sadly some of them never made it. Also, some of them lost their lives on the way out.

The book is now out of print, but copies can be had from book stores who sell out of print books.

Hope you stumble across my reply.

That sounds like an interesting book. There is currently a copy for sale on ebay for £32.75 (which sounds extremely high to me) but there are 6 copies on Amazon starting at £5.00......I might even get one myself as there might be some of my ancestors in there.

Hope that info might help Jane B if she reads her thread.

If anyone is interested, I got my copy of the book from ABE books for about £12.00. If you go ont to Google you will get their website.
