McGregor
I am seeking any information on James Henry McGregor, born 11 September 1830 in Glasgow. He emigrated to South Africa where he then married a local girl. Fought in the Anglo-Boer War on the British side and in one of the papers I have he gives his occupation as a Stone Mason. In the same paper he also states that he served in the Royal Navy. I have no further information and need a birth certificate to help complete my family tree.
Thanks,

Hi Gordon,
You have enough information here and Im sure an enquiry with the Registrar of Birth, Deaths and Marriages in Edinburgh will get you the info you need.
Good luck!
Joop.

Hi, No nothing further to what I have got. Is there an address (Internet) where I can send my request for his birth certificate to?

Hi,
Civil registration of births etc, didnt happen in Scotland until about 1855 , so you wont find a birth certificate for your man, The best you could hope for is a Parish Record image.
The only place you can see Scottish records is at scotlandspeople.gov.uk , where you have to buy credits to view the records. This can be expensive so you might want to consider subscribing to Ancestrys Worldwide package for a month and you can see a transcription of any censuses that he might be in. Good luck in your search.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. with the Namibian Dollar's exchange rate to the Pound being 18.50 Nam. Dollars to one Pound this will be a very expensive exercise for me. I will try.

Re Old parish records the sites says the info given varies and is very scant. There is an example given for 1805 and each entry consists of two lines.I have credits for this site but as the birth you want is outside their dates Im afraid there is not much more to be done on ScotlandsPeople.

Hi Gordon,

You can get the birth certificate online at Scotlands People website.

Good luck.

Laura.

Hi laurac, did you see the cert for this man McGregor ?
RonD
The minimum cost on scotlandspeople is 7 pounds. With that you get 30 credits. In the search put in as much as you know about the person and do a search, it will tell you if there are people who make the criteria. Then you spend a credit and see how many do fit. It will list the person with where they were born and when. Hopefully you will get the correct one.

O.K. Thanks for all the advice.

As I live in Namibia I cannot research my family history myself. How would I go about getting someone to do a bit of research for me over there?

Thanks,

Gordon
Jupiter
Hi ,
You contact a genealogist, give them all the info you have, sit back and wait for the results, then you ask for the bill and you sit back again.
RonD
Jupiter it doesn´t have to be an arm and a leg to do a family history. I have done a few trees for clients for a relatively nominal fee for the hours and costs incurred.
Jupiter
Ron, it doesnt matter what service or work Im getting done, I always get a price at the outset.I dont know the price of doing a family tree.

I wonder if the poster found out about McGregor.
McGregor
RoN, how much would it cost to find info on James Henry McGrergor?
RonD
HI Gordon, I can´t give an exact cost as it would be bit by bit but from what I am seeing in your posts it wouldn´t too much. You would have to hope that he was baptized in Scotland as birth certs weren´t available until 1855. When did James arrive in S.A.? or roughly what age?
McGregor
Hi RonD, He grew up in Scotland. I do not know when he arrived in South Africa but know that he got married on 7 March 1870 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He gave his age as 26 years old then. This would make his birth year 1844 in Glasgow. I know that it is Glasgow as I have his attestation papers for the Boer War in which he gives his place of Birth as Glasgow. He gave his trade as a Stone Cutter. He also mentioned that he had done service in the Royal Navy but gave no further info. Strangely in the attestation papers he gave his birth year as 1830?
Hope you come up with something. Should you want copies of any documents then contact me on my email address; gorchris01@mtcmobile.com.na and I will mail them to you.
Thanks. Gordon
RonD
That changes things as I was looking for a baptism for 1830 and I thought it was a little strange that he fought in the Boer war which I think of as 1890 to 1900 which would make him seem rather old for fighting. I will have another look and see what I can find.
McGregor
RonD, He was quite old when he volunteered for service during the Boer War but was not in service very long.
Thanks,
Gordon
