When we would go round to see our maternal grandparents ,
Grandad always opened the door and would say to us kids ,
Well ' have you ever had your leg cut off , by a whale ,
I never did know and still don't , whether he was saying whale
or wheel .
He was born in Ireland , came to glasgow as an infant and then
went back to Ireland when he was about 4/5 yrs to be educated ,
returned to Glasgow about the age of 12yrs. and the rest
of his education was self taught .
He was extremley interested in politics , in particular socialism ,
and would get into great debates over this "wonderous Dogma "
Well he thought it was !
He loved music , would at the drop of a hat , play his fiddle
and or flute and have all of us dancing and singing.
Tell me stories about the world , which I loved , and on occasion
would send me for his tobacco and to the licenced grocer for
a glass of brandy , I was really to young to be served those items
but because I was a tall child no one ever questioned my age .
He worked in the shipyards as a hole borer and he told little
stories about how he would sing and step dance , sometimes during the lunch
breaks ,waiting for their tea cans to boil .
