Names which have been suggested (thanks to James Lee for most of these) include:
Film Director - Alexander (Sandy) McKendrickWho made some of the best ealing comedies including Whisky Galore and The Ladykillers, The Man in The White Suit . He was born in Glagow and educated in Hillhead Scool.
McKendrick made films in Hollywood too such as The classic Sweet Smell of Success.
James (Jimmy) McGrory Celtic's legendary goalscorer is a world record holder for first class goals in a career spanning over twenty years. (he may not be as glamorous or well know as Ally McCoist but his goalscoring record far exceeds any of McCoists)
Sir Henry Cambell Bannerman Was the first person to ever use the title Prime Minister. He was born and raised in Kelvinside, educated at Glasgow High and Glasgow University and became british Prime Minister in 1905. he also died in downing street in 1908...I think he may be the only Glaswegian to become Prime Minister. Apparently a man of great wit and humanity and of high intellect.
Robbie ColtraneActor & comedian.
Armando IanucciCurrently one of Britains top satirical writers and presenters has writing programmes such as "Im Alan Partridge" Armando Ianucci Show.
Jim KerrSimple Minds fame is an internationally recognised pop start and has been at the top now for over twenty years. Hailing from Castlemilk he has had best selling albums and singles worldwide such as "Dont You Forget about Me and Belfast Child has also done a lot of work to promote human rights especially those in South Africa and wrote and performed the classic tribute song to Nelson Mandela - Mandela Day.
Long shot...
Stan LaurelPerformed his first live comedy sketch in Glasgow. Stan was also educated at Queens Park Secondary and lived in Glasgow from age of 9 to 18. Stan Laurels father owned some of the main theatres in Glasgow - hence the link.
Also...
Craig FergusonActor, comedian and currently very popular as a US-based talk show host.
QUOTE
Comment from IMDB.com re Craig:
Craig Ferguson is one of the brightest and funniest comic wits Great Britain has produced in the last ten years. Still, Ferguson's selection as host of the Late Late Show came as a big surprise. Known to American audiences mostly from his appearances on "The Drew Carey Show," Ferguson seemed like too much of an unknown quantity to host a nightly network talk show. Judging from his first shows as host, however--especially his smashing official debut--casting Ferguson may have been a stroke of genius. The irreverent Scot--a cult figure from his work on "Red Dwarf" and "Freakazoid"-- is lively, likable, sharp and captivating, gently mocking competitors like Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel and poking merciless fun at the dull conventions of late-night. Fans who may have worried that Ferguson's UK comic sensibilities would be blunted or watered down by US network standards should rest easy--at least in early episodes, he's at his best, and is a significant improvement from Craig Kilborn's snarky Hef's-grotto fratboy sensibilities. O'Brien and especially Kimmel should keep a close eye on Ferguson--this show is off to a bold start, and savvy viewers will find Craig Ferguson hard to resist.
I'd be pleased to hear from anyone else with further suggestions about who could be added?
