Hi All,

I've just finished updating the list of famous Glaswegians (and people who became famous in Glasgow) in the Info+ section of the site and have already received suggestions as to who should be added (and maybe someone who should be deleted ohmy.gif ).

http://www.glasgowguide.co.uk/info-fame1.html

The list as it stands today is:

- Sir Muirhead Bone
- Sir George Burns
- Sir William Burrell
- Joseph Black
- Sir Dugald Clerk
- Billy Connolly
- Donald Dewar
- John Elder
- Sir Alex Ferguson
- Robert Foulis
- Robert Foulis
- Thomas Graham
- David Hamilton
- Francis Hutcheson
- Saint Kentigern
- RD Laing
- Sir Thomas Lipton
- Joseph Lister
- Jimmy Logan
- Benny Lynch
- Ally McCoist
- Charles MacIntosh
- Charles Rennie Mackintosh
- James Moffat
- Robert Owen
- Allan Pinkerton
- Sir William Ramsay
- John Scott Russell
- Manny Shinwell
- James Y Simpson
- Adam Smith
- Jock Stein
- Robert Stevenson
- Robert Louis Stevenson
- Alexander Thomson
- William Thomson
- James Watt
- Jim Watt
- John Wheatley

Names which have been suggested (thanks to James Lee for most of these) include:

Film Director - Alexander (Sandy) McKendrick
Who made some of the best ealing comedies including Whisky Galore and The Ladykillers, The Man in The White Suit . He was born in Glagow and educated in Hillhead Scool.
McKendrick made films in Hollywood too such as The classic Sweet Smell of Success.

James (Jimmy) McGrory
Celtic's legendary goalscorer is a world record holder for first class goals in a career spanning over twenty years. (he may not be as glamorous or well know as Ally McCoist but his goalscoring record far exceeds any of McCoists)

Sir Henry Cambell Bannerman
Was the first person to ever use the title Prime Minister. He was born and raised in Kelvinside, educated at Glasgow High and Glasgow University and became british Prime Minister in 1905. he also died in downing street in 1908...I think he may be the only Glaswegian to become Prime Minister. Apparently a man of great wit and humanity and of high intellect.

Robbie Coltrane
Actor & comedian.

Armando Ianucci
Currently one of Britains top satirical writers and presenters has writing programmes such as "Im Alan Partridge" Armando Ianucci Show.

Jim Kerr
Simple Minds fame is an internationally recognised pop start and has been at the top now for over twenty years. Hailing from Castlemilk he has had best selling albums and singles worldwide such as "Dont You Forget about Me and Belfast Child has also done a lot of work to promote human rights especially those in South Africa and wrote and performed the classic tribute song to Nelson Mandela - Mandela Day.

Long shot...Stan Laurel
Performed his first live comedy sketch in Glasgow. Stan was also educated at Queens Park Secondary and lived in Glasgow from age of 9 to 18. Stan Laurels father owned some of the main theatres in Glasgow - hence the link.

Also...Craig Ferguson
Actor, comedian and currently very popular as a US-based talk show host.
QUOTE
Comment from IMDB.com re Craig:

Craig Ferguson is one of the brightest and funniest comic wits Great Britain has produced in the last ten years. Still, Ferguson's selection as host of the Late Late Show came as a big surprise. Known to American audiences mostly from his appearances on "The Drew Carey Show," Ferguson seemed like too much of an unknown quantity to host a nightly network talk show. Judging from his first shows as host, however--especially his smashing official debut--casting Ferguson may have been a stroke of genius. The irreverent Scot--a cult figure from his work on "Red Dwarf" and "Freakazoid"-- is lively, likable, sharp and captivating, gently mocking competitors like Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel and poking merciless fun at the dull conventions of late-night. Fans who may have worried that Ferguson's UK comic sensibilities would be blunted or watered down by US network standards should rest easy--at least in early episodes, he's at his best, and is a significant improvement from Craig Kilborn's snarky Hef's-grotto fratboy sensibilities. O'Brien and especially Kimmel should keep a close eye on Ferguson--this show is off to a bold start, and savvy viewers will find Craig Ferguson hard to resist.

I'd be pleased to hear from anyone else with further suggestions about who could be added?

GG.

...BTW while I was updating the list I was became aware that there were no women on the list I'd created (by no means deliberate and only spotted after it was made) so I would be grateful for suggestion for our famous women.

Lulu is a good one as is Clare Grogan.....on the subject of pop stars we shouldnt forget :

Travis from Cathcart

Del Amitri from the west end...I remember justin Currie as a kid in Hyndland

The Bluebells

Darius (of pop idol fame)

Wet Wet Wet (though theyre clydebank)

Texas...Sharlene Spiteri is from the south side

Alan McGee - the pop guru who discovered Oasis

Gillies and Billy Mckinnon - film actors and directors

Dont know if these folk are famous enough to be included....

But anyways

See u

Here's a few more mentioned by James Lee in an email:

Gerry Rafferty
Internationally famous singer and songwriter, renowned for the classic number one hit Baker St and Stuck in the Middle with you made him a millionaire because of the Quentin Tarantino film Reservoir Dogs - it was the backing music for one of cinemas most graphically violent scenes. Only thing is I think he may have been born in Paisley but he certainly lived for a long time in Glasgow's West End and set up a group with Billy Connolly in the sixties called The Humblebums before either were famous.

Morag Ross
Currently one of the top make up artists in the world. She is Head of Make Up for International Cosmetic Giants Max factor and won a BAFTA for the Make Up in the blockbuster film The Aviator for which she also received an oscar nomination. She has "made up" many hollywood stars and been instrumental in giving many films authenticity. She is also in the max Factor adverts promoting the make up...I know she's definately Glaswegian because she used to be my neighbour in Hyndland and went to school with sisters...small world isnt it. Incidentally, I also remember Armando Ianucci from School as well.

Other ones I could think of where:

Robert Carlisle - International actor from Maryhill

Jackie Paterson - World Champion Boxer from The West End

Peter Mullan - mainly film actor from the South Side

Maureen Beattie - shakespearean actress from the West End (mainly of Casualty fame also daughter of Johnnie Beattie)

Your use of the adverb "graphically" sugests we saw the cutting off of the ear when we did not. The use of of the song meant we imagined it.

Also Dexter you're splitting hairs mate...yes of course his music made the scene what it is and yes we didnt quite rightly see the ear being cut off...but hey his song and musical achievements deserve a mention on Glasgows greatest thats all I said...and before stuarty has a go...yes I know Rafferty comes from paisley...christ u lot are worse than women....

I suppose I'll put my two bobs worth in, and well worth it when you listen to them.

Jimmy Barnes,..(born as-Swan) in Cowcaddens, and his mothers name,.. Dorothy Dixon.
"Barnsie" as he's known in Australia,...is an icon over here, he's just brought out an album called "Double Happiness", and a great one at that i might add, you can listen to parts of the songs at his web site, just google.....www.Jimmy Barnes.com and click on the Double Happiness flash card, click on individual names to read/listen.

Grace knight,... also born in Glasgow,...another icon over here, she's a jazz/blues singer and has written a childrens book-Dragons, flies, monsters & spies. You can check her music out by googling her name and go into the "zeitgeist" site her new album.

John Paul Young,...also born in Glasgow,...was an icon over here, he was better known as "squeek", because he's around 5/4 and used to screem for help when being mobbed by fans. John would probably be better known for the singer in the "Australian movie Strictly Ballroom" singing "love is in the air".

If i remember more i'll update.
