Benny Ive just read your post about the backcourt at Garscube Road and in particular Mr Bailey,the waterman.I remember him very well in fact he was a regular visitor to our house as his best friend was my grannies brother.Big Jock or the Baileyman was a well known sight round Queens Cross on his big black bike.During his working day he managed to be the groundsman at Firhill and it was reckoned he was one of the best in the business.
Jock loved a dram and was well looked after by my great uncle who worked for the excise in Port Dundas.Him and Jock had a wee arrangement where Jock would be left a half bottle of unlabelled whisky,wrapped in newspaper,in one of the tobys just outside the waterboard workshop down from Queens Cross.He often said that shop whisky was mere water compared with my uncles unlabelled.

Nice to hear about Mr Bailey, Joop. I wis only a wean - had just started Springbank primary - when we left Garscube Road for a new hoose in Ruchazie, so I don't really remember much about him, although my sisters probably would. And it's no often ye hear the word "toby" furra stank nooadays either. (It's no often ye hear the word "stank" either, come tae think of it.) Ah knew right away whit it meant though, because ma Da wis a plumber and gasfitter, and that wis his nom-de-plume wi the bookie's for many years - Toby Key.

One third of all applications for Diamond Jubilee street parties in Scotland have come from Edinburgh.

Councils across the country have received 97 applications for Jubilee street parties – almost five times the number for the royal wedding last year.

One third of these have come from the capital with 33 people applying for a road closure to hold a party.

Glasgow was next in line but only eight people have applied to hold a party in Scotland’s biggest city. ...

Gemini, I remember as a teenager, my friend and I went to see Dickie Valentine in the Pavilion and my brother and his pal were with us.
When Dickie was singing 'The Finger of Suspicion points at you', all us teenagers were on our feet screaming me, me, me. My brother and his pal were practically under the seat trying to hide and kidding on they were not with us.

We got his autograph that night when he came to the back door after the show, but it's long lost.
