I was born in a maternity home at 65 kelvinside gdns (near Kelvin Bridge) in 1941 and would like to get in touch with anyone else who has the same address on their birth certificate or anyone who knows about it. It may have been a house called Northbank.

Northbank,
Kelvinside Gardens is a really nice street.I went to school nearby in the 60s so it has been named that for a long time.On the even number side there are large houses certainly big enough to be maternity homes. On the other side, odd numbers is the school then some terraced houses then red sandstone tenements.Have a look on Google Maps.Ive had a search through old street names and maternity homes but cannot find any info.If you have any further details from your birth certificate put it on and Ill try to help.
Cheers.
Joop.

Thanks Joop
I believe the house was demolished in the 70s to make way for 3 blocks of flats. Before that it seemed to have been a house of multiple occupancy for a while. I think that Northbank stood at the corner of Kelvinside Gdns and Wilton Street.
Does any of this help?

Hi, I remember when those flats were built,Fergus court I think is the name but they are built on the even side numbers ,contrary to what you say the home was at 65.I think perhaps you have the wrong number so the possibility is that the home was one of the big houses demolished at that time for the new flats.Hope this helps but as I said if you have any other info fire it on.Youve got me interested!
All the best,
Joop

Hi Joop
Now you've got me confused.
My birth certificate deffinitely says 65 Kelvinside Gdns. Old maps show the area as the house and grounds named Northbank.
Most of my information came from Gordon Urquhart's book 'Along Great Western Road'
Do you know anyone who lived in that area in the 1940s??

In the 1940s that area was a really upper middle class place with big houses and households employing servants. At first I thought we were talking about two different places.Could it have been one of the terraces along GWR later renamed? Also the reference to Kelvin Bridge which usually refers to the bridge situated between Park Road and Otago Street.Your Kelvin Bridge is I think in fact Queen Margaret Bridge which is in close proximity to Kelvinside Gardens. That said it doesnt give any further info on the home which according to your own research did stand there.
Joop.

Another maternity home along the GWR was called Redlands.

Thanks again, Joop
There was also a maternity hospital along GWR called Homelands. It was run by the Salvation Army. I have a friend who was born there but her birth certificate was registered in the Hillhead district whereas mine was registered in the Maryhill district. As you probably know in those days births had to be registered where they took place so that's how I know I wasn't born in any of these other places.
I am sure that by now you are bored rigid with all this and have probably lost the will to live. If not please ask around to any of your friends who lived or went to school in the area. The answer must be out there somewhere.
Cheers

Hi, I think your question is answered in that the home was most probably situated in Kelvinside Gardens at the site which was demolished for the new flats.Im certainly not bored as Im always interested to hear historical facts about where I was raised and if I hear anything else I will certainly be happy to let you know.Regards,
Joop

I have now received two photos of Northbank House. One is an aerial photo taken in 1952 and the other was taken in the 60s. All I have to do now is connect Northbank to Homelands but the Salvation Army who ran the Homelands along Gt Western Rd say they have no records of an annex called Northbank.
I will let you know of any further developments. If you have anything to add, please do.
Thanks for bearing with me on this one.

A man who is very knoledgable about Maryhill got copies of it from the Mitchell Library for me but they don't have a reference no. on the back.
I don't know how to put them on here. I don't see any place for attachments.
I f you want to give me your email address I'll send them to you and maybe you'll recognise the building as it wasn't pulled down till the seventies.

The house at 65 Kelvinside Gardens was a multiple Occupancy I lived in it with my family from about 1945 until we moved to Drumchapel in 1953. We lived in one section of this lovely big House with another five families who all had their own section. The property was rented from Glasgow Corporation. I was always told it was a nursing home before it was converted into residential apartments.
