QUOTE (Tomi H-H @ 27th Jan 2009, 02:57pm) *
I had two extremely close relationships with pets, firstly a German Shepherd whose mother's mother was a full wolf. Laika, as she was called, could be extremely dangerous at times, would always walk half a length in front of me, never to heel, and watched every one who passed with a bodyguard's glare. She was a handful but she would genuinely have laid down her life for me, I thought...one day I was swimming in the Rhein and got caught in a current, I called Laika at the pitch of my voice and she plunged into the river and headed straight for me. I knew I only had to grab hold of her choke-lead or her tail and I'd be o.k. She came to within a few feet of me and must have felt that the strength of the current was too much for her to handle and moved away out of the current leaving me to my own devices. I got out somehow but thanked her anyway for trying. Maybe the self-preservation bit was the wolf in her.

Just received this photo today (after 22 years rolleyes.gif )

Andi, in the picture with Benny on the left and LAIKA on the right, posted this photo (at my request, on Facebook) of a picture I took which still hangs on her fathers living room wall.
A friend of his once, while visiting him and seeing the picture for the first time, said, "What a beautiful picture, Rolf. Who is that?" Andi's father replied, "That's Laika and Benny." rolleyes.gif
You should have seen Andi's face. biggrin.gif

We had a brown Labrador called Sheba who was very attached to my eldest daughter.
I was working away from home one time and my wife was in Scotland on holiday which left our two daughters looking after the house.

One day I get a phone call from my daughter telling me that after going to bed somebody had tried to break into the house through the front door ohmy.gif , this I found strange as there was a steel security door in place and Sheba slept outside the door every night.

Apparently she called our next door neighbour who looked over the wall but could not see anybody and Sheba was where she normaly was.

However better safe than sorry I told her to call in a security company and have an alarm fitted with panic buttons for both of them that they could wear around their necks.
A few months later I was at home with my daughters when someone tried to break in again.

Straight away I jumped up and ran to the front door and discovered the villian that was trying to get inside.
It was Sheba she had her paw jammed in the security gate and was busy pulling it back and forward trying to get it open.
So for months I was paying a security company to protect my family from our own dog. dry.gif

Any one remember this guy?

The Kindergarten Kat.

The Story.

Moorli was always a thin cat but recently he's becoming like skin an' bone. Mary's mum says he's not eatin' too much at home either so on Monday morning we took him down to the vet.
Vet suspects kidney problems (he is an old cat although were not sure how old) so he has to remain at the vet's till tomorrow (Thursday).

On Tuesday afternoon we had a visit from the cook in the kindergarten.
The kid's are all goin' barmy 'cos nobody has seen hide nor hair of Moorli Monday or Tuesday and the cook was gettin' worried 'cos he didn't show up outside the kitchen on both days either. rolleyes.gif
At least we know why he's not eating at home. biggrin.gif

We assured them that they'd probably see him on Thursday 'cos he's climbin' the walls at the vet's. laugh.gif

Goodbye Kindergarten Cat.
Last night we managed to bring Moorli in just before the storm broke; he always was a street cat, no matter how long he shared our house. Sometime after midnight when it had quietened down a bit, Mary's mum let him back out ... cos he wouldn't quieten down. Around 0ne o'clock I heard a cat out in the yard and assumed it was a neighbour's cat who is usually out all night too; but wants to be indoors, so ignored him (he usually uses my car to spring up onto my window ledge and "mark" my window).
This morning Mary woke me before going to work. The cat I'd heard early this morning was Moorli. He'd been hit by a car in the darkness and sustained a whole lot of superficial scuffs and cuts; probably when he hit the ground again. Together with Mary's mum I took him to the vet but it was obvious that his time had come. Because of his kidney problem he was a reluctant eater and the scales showed 3.5 kilo ... our Charlie is 6.1 kilo and the Big Maus weighs in at 7.2 kilo.
So without much ado we decided to allieviate his suffering and put him to sleep. The Vet had offered Morphine and anti-biotics but we agreed that was only going to stem his present pain over the weekend.
Had I realised, or even checked to see if it was the neighbours's "Felix" this morning, I could have at least offered him some comfort through the night instead of which he lay the whole night in pain outside in the rain on our "WELCOME" mat.
If I could imagine an afterlife for Moorli it would be a handicapped children's Kindergarden where Moorli spent his happiest days with kindred spirits.
Goodbye Moorli.
Sorry I was too late.

Horrible when that happens Tomi you get so attached to them.
We used to have a house that was a regular Pets Cemetery with at least five dogs buried in various parts of the garden.

Well, my wee Jack Russel 'Smartie' (photo-previous somewhere), aged 15 is on his last legs and may not see the year out. I have seen too many great dogs pass away, he will be our last. Been heartbroken too often. sad.gif

This is my wee lass Kimmy, She passed away July 19th last year aged 17. I miss her very much but am so very glad for the years I had with her.

Rab, Smartie looks a wee cutie. I know how you're feeling our last 6 months were hard too. Just so hard to make 'that' decision and although I knew it was the right thing to do I felt terrible guilt for quite a long time after her death. Now at the stage where I can think of her and mainly smile instead of crying.

Aye G-Man. You only have to look at that lovely wee face to see what a nice dog she was. My Dad used to say there was nothing like the 'trust in the eyes of a dog' - and he was right!. Lump in the throat now!! sad.gif

I am owned by a 7 year old boxer who knows she is only 2 ,she has me fully trained , she does not mind sharing my food at all she is good that way , I swear she has ESP as she knows what I am thinking before I do , she loves taking long walks ,loves riding in the truck , loves to wrestle and rough house she plays with my Nephew's 3 year old who usually winds up laying on Maire , she will take the leash put it on Maire and walk her through the house and yard , now If I were remove the leash Maire would run the entire yard like a Tazmanian Devil , I am amazed at the combination of strenght and intelligence of the breed they know when to use either trait , anybody with a boxer knows what I am talking about , our pets have thia ability to transform us one moment we are arguing about Politics ,Religion Independence , History or philosophy , then the minute our Pets are the topic of conversation we melt like a snowball in July unable to maintain the hard edge to debate , People will always break your heart , Pets only once in their life Attached File  my_protector.bmp ( 900.05K ) PS how do you put the picture on the post huh.gif

HI Seamus, there are two ways to reply to a post. "Fast Reply" and "Add Reply" Use the latter then you can access your photo files by clicking on the "Search" button which opens your files. Select, Upload, then open the "Manage current attatchments", click on the left icon and your picture is up in the post where you can use the icons on top right to "Center" it.
Preview post first then you'll see if it's the right picture you've posted or if there are too many "typos"

Hi Seamus

What I do is click on 'add reply'
click on 'browse'
this take me to my computer menu where i then select the photo i want upload
i then click on upload
click on 'manage current attachments'
click on the menu that drops down from this which then loads the image onto the message screen

The photo underneath is not my dog but one of my favourite photos that I have saved.
From a newspaper story in America where the owner has had his dog for many years and now it suffers from arthritis so badly that the only way the dog can get any sleep is when the owner takes him into the local lake and holds him while he sleeps.

This photo to me is what owning a pet is all about its not something you throw a scrap of food at now and again but should be a partnership.

The love of the man for his pet and the trust of the dog in this photo shows what it all about.

Seamus, sorry man - Lost in interpretation. My computer is German and instead of "Browse" I have "Search".
Dave, I read that article and was extremely moved by that man's love and consideration for his dog.
When my cat; the Old Maus, had his rear leg removed after a car accident, in order to prevent additional injuries while his wounds healed he was kept in a big cage at home for a while which; along with his pain, was driving him completely bonkers ... so I would squeeze myself half in there with him to soothe him and try to keep him sane. At night the cage would go on my bed and I'd repeat the procedure. If he tried to crawl out he'd wake me.
They're family, they're friends and they need you.
