Sheperds Pie for us tonight, had a nice salad for lunch with my daughter Katie, she had a Ceasar and I went for the chicken one.

Posted by: stratson 17th Jul 2008, 09:55am

Am still trying to puzzle out what to make for tonight>>>>Decisions! Decisions!
Last night we had a beef casserole with doughballs, usual carrot, turnip and onions and mash potatoes. My son had dessert.
Am going out shortly, think I will get some fresh salmon, will dig up some of my early spuds, and bring some lettuce and rocket, right, that's the menu for tonight.. Don't always have dessert. smile.gif

Posted by: jaybee 17th Jul 2008, 12:34pm

Stratson, can you give me your recipe for doughballs please? Do you use Artora beef suet???? Would love to make them like my old grannie used to. They were magic. Tonight we are having pot roast with carrots and turnip. Jaybee

Posted by: stratson 17th Jul 2008, 02:53pm

Hi Jaybee>>>My recipe for doughballs>>>>>
I buy a packet of Mix "Original"
"Goldenfry" Brand,
Farmhouse style Dumplings.Light and Fluffy, Directions are on pack,. afraid I cheat and take the easy route. rolleyes.gif
I will however get the proper recipe with Atora suet. Will get back to you later(If you can buy a packet of Atora suet the recipe is on side of the pack.)

See that cabbage diet wellfield, hope it works for you.
You can really diet eating what you like, so long as you count your calories.
A female can have 1,000, a male 1,500, you can have a good meal with that amount,
.
Hope ye like cabbage! What kind are you eating??? smile.gif

Stratson your recipe for Dough Balls is the way I make them, although it's a while since I made them. The easy way to remember the recipe was; twice the amount of flour to suet.

I never knew you could get ready mixed dough balls with just the water to add.

Angel, whats perrogies???????????

Posted by: jaybee 17th Jul 2008, 10:03pm

Stratson, thanks a million. The next time I am in Glasgow (October), I will pick up some of the packaged ones to try too, as well as the Atora. I think I can bring the Atora back in my suitcase, well I will try anyway. There is nothing remotely similar we can buy here and the suet is just horrible. Looking forward to trying both, and thanks again. Jaybee

Posted by: penny dainty 17th Jul 2008, 10:10pm

Hi Jaybee , I might be wrong in assuming this , but isnt Atora made from beef fat?as I say I might be wrong. We cant get it here either.
My brother in law came over to OZ for a visit before we got Hellmans and he sneaked me two jars over inside his shoes, not the ones he was wearing I might add. laugh.gif

Angel, whats perrogies???????????

Heather , I buy perogies from the freezer section in the store, they are made from a mixture of flour and potatos, with either a bacon or cheese filling and they look like little white turnovers
or if you know what ravioli is, something like them, you boil the perogies for about 4or5 mins.and eat them with fried onions or sour cream, I,ve had them fried on occasion for breakfast.
I,m not sure but I think they maybe a polish dish..

After a very enjoyable day weeding and planting in the sunshine today, came home and made Sweet Peppered steaks, onions and mushrooms, had left my own Charlotte New Potatoes just ready to boil, easy peasy, the packets of steamfresh, Baby corn, green beans and baby carrots.
Very tasty.>>>>On the fresh Salmon tomorrow, already poached and refrigerated, will make a nice Green Salad.(Have a couple of appts. tomorrow.)

Didn't do much today so I spent some time in the kitchen. Made veal parmigiano with scalloped spuds and mashed carrot and turnip mixture. Then some sticky toffee pudding. I cheated though, I bought the sticky toffee pudding but made my own custard to go over it. What a treat to find sticky toffee pudding here in my local grocery store in Canada. I also hear that Hagen Daas icecream have come out with a sticky toffee ice cream, can't wait to try it. Jaybee

Posted by: penny dainty 21st Jul 2008, 11:05pm

Some tasty suggestions here.We had roast chicken on Sunday night , so I boiled up the carcass and made soup from the stock with lots of veggies and some rice , very filling and tasty , made some toasted cheese to go with it.
Casserole for tonight , made yesterday as I am on the late shift today so wont get home till after 7 , dont feel like cooking then , so it is all ready just to heat up.

Posted by: Isobel 22nd Jul 2008, 02:30am

Memories are getting harder but I remember the following from my life in 'theDrum' during the late fifties:

'Totties, Ham and Turnip'; 'Mince and Totties'; Sausage, Egg and Chips (all deep fried in lard).

When we went to visit Granny Brown who lived in Crimea Street in Anderston, we'd ocassionally get fish and chips from a 'Chippie' up towards Anderston Cross.

For Christmas Dinner we'd sometimes have a Roast Chicken Dinner (oddly enough since I now live in Australia) with the chicken coming from a tin and produced in Australia ! Those Christmas Hampers were something really special !

Now I eat similar to what all the above contributors do, but that's a great advantage to any Scot now living in Oz !

Regards,
Tombro smile.gif

They did taste wonderful, PD, and I still love my chips.

Sadly though, due to a heart attack two years ago and having recently been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, my chip eating days are all but over !

I guess I'll have to keep my memories and just imagine I'm eating chips while munching on raw carrots and crisp lettuce !

Posted by: tombro 2nd Sep 2008, 11:36am

Whoops, guys !

Tonight, on doctor's orders, I had dry toast and some fruit juice for dinner !

Felt queasy earlier today and my friends at school insisted on taking me to the doctor. It seems I've picked up a tummy bug and need to restrict my diet for the next couple of days: no greasy food, no dairy food and definitely no alcohol ! Also have more bloody tablets to take !

Stratson and PD are right, Stuarty. Forget the dripping and replace it with canola or Olive Oil.

Regards,
Tombro sad.gif

Hope your feeling better soon Tombro, was it antibiotics Dr. gave you?

I use Virgin Olive Oil, and very little of that. We all have our fatal flaws,I love my sweeties and cakes.
Going to have to give them away, am putting on too much weight. rolleyes.gif

Old fashioned stew for dinner tonight and I am a happy person, a new Scottish/Irish store has opened just a couple of miles from here and I was able to buy Atora Beef Suet, so here we got, doughballs to go with the stew tonight. I had a great time shopping in the store but as most things are imported, the prices are realy high. For example, a tin of Batchelor's Marrowfat peas $2.49 (or one pound, twenty five P approximately). Not to worry, great for a treat. Also bought Lorne sausage, black pudding, Ayrshire Bacon, tattie scones, scotch pies, bridies and Tunnocks caramel wafers..... yup, I am happy. Jaybee

Posted by: tombro 4th Sep 2008, 09:07am

Thanks for the kind thought, Stratson !

I'm much better now, back at school and starting to eat normal again. The tablets were just to ease the bad effect a stomach bug can have on the various other tablets I take.

Tonight I had Garlic Bacon and Mushrooms in gravy (with onion celery and capsicum, too !) served on a bed of Mashed Pumpkin, Potato and Cabbage.

I'm back to eating good again !

Regards,
Tombro smile.gif

I have absolutely no idea sad.gif

Posted by: tombro 6th Sep 2008, 10:27am

Just an addition to my previous post !

The garlic, onion, celery and capsicum were all added as part of the gravy.

One of my weakenesses is that I add all four of these elements to nearly everything I cook; a far cry from my childhood in 'the Drum' where vinegar and HP sauce were the only preferred additives !

Regards,
Tombro tongue.gif
