So, whatt will be the future for Joey,Wombat? Will he hang about your spread, become a pet, when he's capable of looking after himself or go off with other roos?

Posted by: wombat 3rd May 2010, 11:43pm

tommy they usually stick around ,especially when spoiled , but he can make up his own mind when ready biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tommy Kennedy 4th May 2010, 03:34pm

http://www.dfat.gov.au/facts/kangaroos.html

Wee Jonny, my youngest G/son came home from school with above web address for roos. With Wombats pics and his 'show and tell' he has the whole class studying roos - he downloaded all 'Joey's' pics to disc for class computers.
He, like me and his class didn't know the babby roos were called Joeys.

So, Wombat, your 'Joey' has a class room of kids - mostly 10 year olds - all fans of Joey and wanting to 'follow' his life!!!

HOW JOEY WAS RESCUED

it was on the saturday of the ANZAC day long weekend ,wifie was out for her usual morning stroll but not as early as usual B cos of IDIOTS racing around and shooting the night B4 when she reached the top of our driveway our 3 little dogs who were ahead and on a wombat mound began barking so she went to look and found the joey in a hollow ,he had mud spattered on him ,dried out by the morning sun ,poor wee fella had been out all night as i remember hearing rain on the roof at 1am,it was 11 am when he was found,we think the idiots/neds drivin around the night B4 chasin roos around and shooting at them may have seperated joey and his mum from the rest of the MOB ,joey was weak in his hind legs and could barely stand so she picked him up and brought him home where it was warm and dry and he could be cleaned and fed .

more to come later biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tommy Kennedy 5th May 2010, 11:29pm

Great pics, Wombat!

Posted by: penny dainty 6th May 2010, 11:05pm

Really lovely pics of the wee Joey Wombat , so cute when they are small. It never ceases to amaze me when i see them roaming around the countryside , lovely beasties they are.
All to many of them fall prey to traffic on the roads unfortunately , you often see dead ones at the side of the road .like you see rabbits in the uk .
We went from NSW to Queensland via the New England Highway one year and i was apalled at the amount of roadkill there was.
I hope this wee joey has a long and fruitful life.
Thanks for the P.M Tommy.

Just thinking, Wombat: You should send some fotos of Joey to the Oz film board - there is great scope there for an 'Animated film' of the life of a an 'Orphaned roo' -suggesting that to them.
'Skippy -the Bush kangaroo' was a world wide success, even in U.S. and the Oz tourist board are looking for ways to publicse Oz.

Even better, Tommy, how aboot a thriller - "Joey Meets Crocodile Tommy". Wee Joey could be threatened by a rogue crocodile that's been stalkin Wombat's property, an you could be ower oan a visit. Ah can see it aw noo - poor wee Joey shakin wi fear as the croc slithers towards him, Wombat raises his rifle tae pot the croc an save wee Joey, but - he cannae shoot - he mebbe hit Joey by mistake. Crocodile Tommy strides manfully forward an says, "Leave it tae me, Wombat". A deadly hand tae hand combat ensues between man and croc. Close ups o wee Joey, panic stricken, an Wombat, staunin in open mouthed wonder, as you dispatch the croc wi wan deft flick o yer Swss Army knife. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Tommy Kennedy 8th May 2010, 04:07pm

Naw, naw Benny, I've never taken advantage of any beast using a weapon - that's unfair - the trick with crocs is to leap over their gaping mouth, land on their back, with both hands grab and bend back their head still it snaps. It's a humane way to dispatch them tongue.gif
I will confess to using a knife when I've been shark fighting coz they're very slippy to get a hold of - the thing to remember with sharks - they only attack you if you're wet laugh.gif

I'm sure you have everyones respect, Wombat, for the care you're both giving Joey, must be some hard work/time involved in it.
Wee Jonny has emailed his big cuz in Oz - asking him if he finds a wee baby roo to bring it back with him when he comes home later in the year!

Posted by: carmella 14th May 2010, 04:57pm

Just out of curiosity Wombat - when little Joey becomes big Joey - will you let him roam off or I suppose he'll be tame enough he'll want to stay around your place?

Also, I can't remember how you came by him - he was a wee rescue, had his mother abandoned him?

Posted by: wombat 14th May 2010, 10:12pm

Tommy rescues an abandoned baby elephant from Moutain bear[IMG]
Went with my son/.Gkids to 'Portmadog' at the week-end. He was taking his caravan down to a camp site near the beach there to 'site' it for the summer. He's bought the boys a 'Jet ski' so will be down there most week-ends in the summer. On the way back, motoring thru the Welsh mountains saw this wee baby elelphant under attack from a mountain bear. As you can imagine I leapt from the car; tackled the bear, saw it off with a good kick up the ass rolleyes.gif
Son hired a horse box from a local stable took the baby elephant back to his house, he has a large garden and wee Jonny can look after it.
Took it for awalk down town this morning so it will get used to people as wee Jonny will want to take it walkies laugh.gif

Great photies, Tommy, even if ye are prone tae some slight exaggerations aboot yer white hunter status. smile.gif

Ah only found oot the other day that there wis a colony of wallabies oan Inchconnachan in Loch Lomond. Apparently they'd been there fur 60 years, but the Park Authority wanted tae cull them tae preserve the grouse.

You do realize Wombat that this wee Joey is a 'babe magnet' LOL

My nephew has just turned 20, and because my dogs are only wee things he would never take them for a walk.

Low and behold you could have taken my breath away when last time he was here, he asked to take them for a walk.

I agreed.

He comes back all big smiles over his face, so naturally I asked him what was so amusing - well he said to me, "taking them for a walk was great, I'll do it again - never realized they were 'babe magnets'!

True story folks, you heard it here first!! So, I think that's Wombat's game to get all of us lassies on his thread about wee Joey!

Wombat, you should consider buying a cheap 'Proper' video camera - you don't need anything fancy. Even a cheap one gives you 'Leads' that you can plug into computer AND telly to view. You might be able to recover the costs by 'selling' video of Joey to a telly station. -Once you transfer a video disc to computer its dead easy to email it.
If you sent me a 'copy disc' of something daft he does with the dogs, I bet I could get it on here:
'You've been Framed' - you get 250 quid for them here (of course I'd cut you in rolleyes.gif)

I'm a singing kangaroo and I come from far away.

I like to hop, hop, hop all day.

Would you like to come and play?

We'll hop, hop, hop, hop,

What do you say?

I go hop, hop 'cause I'm a kangaroo,

So get in my pouch and I'll hop with you.

I go hop, hop while I sing my song,

Hop, hop, hop, hop, hopping along.

I've got big feet that I use like a spring,

That's why hop, hop, hop is my thing.

I like to hop and I like to sing,

Hop, hop, hop, hop, ring-a-ding-ding!

Come on, kids, sing along with the kangaroo!

I like to hop and I like to sing,

Hop, hop, hop, hop, ring-a-ding-ding!

Hop, hop, hop, hop, ring-a-ding-ding!

Hop, hop, hop, hop, ring-a-ding-ding!

wee joey forlorn and sadly rejected
why was it your plight tae be ejected ?
seperated fae yir mothers pouch so soon
to lay on a wombat mound through rain sprinkled night
til daylight and the sunshines peak near noon .

what a brave wee crittur
to attempt tae fight off barking hounds
wie yir tiny paws an defensive growls
powerless tae hop tae flee
brought me to your aid

saved by the one your creator sent
and to know your sweet content
depending on who supplies all your needs
shelter,warmth,and milk feeds

to gently lick the hand
that cares in patient plan
in your lifes time table
so little joey grey
Im glad that i was able.

You hit the nail on the head Cash - this has got to be one of the nicest threads on the GG.

Loved the beautiful poem by Mrs. W. and it says it all.

This is just terrific, and look at the wee man when he's sleeping it's a wonder of nature that there are so many beautiful animals around the world, and so many of them in Australia -I am so glad that this wee things was rescued from a fate worse than death, perhaps in a cruel way by some human or some other animal.

If you save one wee animal, you've saved a lot - well done - you know I have a wee lump in my throat and I had a tear in my eyes reading that poem.

I am very soft hearted - and it's never improved with age - can't help the people that we are at the end of the day.

Thanks to Tommy too for putting these pics up here for Wombat.

Can't wait for the movie xx

I have just read this thread right through from the beginning and I am in awe of both Wombat and his wifey for the job they have done so far in raising Joey. What a lovely wee thing he is, as Carmella said, you could just pick him up and cuddle him. Please keep on giving us these updates, I'm looking forward to seeing him when he comes out of his pouch. How much longer?

I was sorry to read about roos being hit by cars and left at the side of the road. I know what that is like, we don't have roos but we do have deer, and lots of them and they often leap onto the road and hit a passing car. We also have cougars and coyotes but they are a lot sneakier!

Keep these photos coming Wombat and Tommy.

Just got some non- Joey pics thru from Wombat - I'll post on his thread shortly.Great this little 'peak' we get into the Oz outback.
What I remember most of my time in Oz, during the 50s was seing/expeiriencing the small towns and going into the 'Outback' from Wyndham, N.W. Oz seeing roos in their natural habitat. There was nothing much to do there - just a 'loading port' to take on 'beef'. Most of the crew found it boring but I loved it. Some of us hired horses and with the local 'Constable' as he was called, as a guide, ventured into the outback.

Of course it was where I honed my skills as a Crocodile wrestler, on the Wyndham river. rolleyes.gif
After 3 weeks I was wrestling 2 at a time tongue.gif

Ach, all wimpish stuff.
Used to be 3 weeks crossing the Pacific -Panama to Sydney - with 'heave to stops' for engine service.
Crew used to lower down on rope, dip in and outa the sea' legs o' lamb, all kinds of meat to attract sharks.
I got the idea we should take it in turn to be 'lowered' down - rope round waist and holding a frozen leg o' lamb - shark would pop up and you hit it on the head wi' the leg o' lamb. Guy who got the most was the winner; Of course I was always the winner rolleyes.gif .

Sometimes, the shark would get the leg o' lamb, but I wouldn't let go and shark would pull me into the sea - then it was a real relief from boredom for the crew as hey saw me thrashing about fighting the shark tongue.gif

I take joey and the dogs for a walk,

As our front gate we reach

we take the bush track to the road

then his head pop's up "what's there"?

the dogs had made a roo mob hop,

while they are grazing the grassland crop

tails thud on the limestone floor

joey's ears twitch excitedly wanting more

further on there are puddles to dodge

near sandalwood trees where magpies lodge

by native scrubland groundlarks play

wishing us a happy day.

All thru the night
In the middle of Oz
A small creature laid still
Life ebbing away with the cold of the night; no hope seemed at hand, no Mother to care;
But as the sun rose help was to hand;
Two little dogs and a Dear lady came by
She lifted it gently, and with the experience of a Mother
She snuggled it close to her breast
Feeling the stirring of life, she hurried back home;
Warmth and milk was needed at once.
The rest of the story is pictorially told
To countries far off in colour as well
It stirred the hearts of all GG members here
Who said: ‘Tell us more, more more’.

Wombat Type in 'You tube' at google for info on 'uploading' the movie: At 'Search' type in 'Uploading'
(so, how have you got the movie now? has son left camcorder or disc?)

YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras, camcorders, and cell phones in the .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG file formats. I am using AVS Video Converter which can do this well, it also can convert any videos or audios between different formats, have a try by yourself. You can yahoo or google search and download it, hope it can help you.

Mind try it when you're sober tongue.gif - If successful - give it a Title - let me know; I'll copy it and post here so members can down load it

I'll have a look at pisca - maybe you can't upload a movie there, but I should think you could
Yea, you can take a movie with most digi cameras.

Have you, using the lead provided with camera, loaded the movie on to your computer. You should have had the info with camera how to do this.
Are you still with that 'old computer'? All comp. now come with a 'Photo Gallery'..So-----just plug lead to camera and computer, switch on camera and it will down load automatically to: 'Photo Gallery'

Also: At Google type in; 'Kodak Easy share' or/ and 'photo fun' (But Kodak is best) and do as above. When uploaded to Kodak you will see a 'Still' photo - click on it and movie starts
By using 'Kodak' you can email me it and I can post it here

Was that supposed to be a 'Movie' you sent thru? If so it didn't come thru as a movie.
Isn't there a 10 year kid nearby you that can show you how to 'upload' a movie

Don't you take any stick aff that TK, Wombat. 'e gave me aw that wi' photies in a bucket or somethin'. Might as well o' been soup in a basket for me laugh.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Cash-Ma-Giro 16th Jun 2010, 12:48am

Oh boy, just fantastic.
lol, we're like a huge family of gran and granpa's all chuffed with our first grandson's first steps. biggrin.gif

TK, I think you should contact STV with this story, they'd love it, specially as it's on a Glasgow Forum.

Great publicity for GG as well, mibbie get hunners merr members joinin' anaw.
Just make sure you get a good fee for wee joey though. lol

Posted by: carmella 16th Jun 2010, 08:25am

You know something Cash I absolutely agree with you.

We are all of us, loving and nurturing this wee saved animal and watching his growth on a day to day basis.

I think it would make a great wee story - let's face it, there have been stories - good ones, featured on TV but this one is so different.

A worthy cause for stardom I think - wonder what Martin would think of it!!!!

Oh just had another thought - maybe STV would send a wee crew out to Oz to Wombat's place, and if I let them know mibees they would let me tag along and I could meet the wee fella in person. LOL

Now there's another thought - SKY news do a feature on the most watched videos from YouTube - hey - Joey could be famous once he's on there.

Just seen I've more pics thru - will post later
Few months ago there was a video of a Carnival or something in U.S., on telly, - all kind of entertainers including A Clown & a Kangaroo.
Roo didn't like the clown, attacked him, got it in a strangle hold, chocking him.
Took several guys to pull roo off. Clown had to be taken to hospital

POst 274. That THee.
They used to say, of guys like him, in Auld Glesga: 'He's a wee bit slow' tongue.gif

ERMMMMM!

Have we decided on a venue for the opening night? Somewhere between here and Australia it might have to be!!

Posted by: Tori G 20th Jun 2010, 03:14pm

Hi everyone, been looking at all the new photo's of "Joey" they are just great, and how lovely he is getting now compared to the skinny rat look he used to be.

Hi Carmella, if the football team from here, knew about Joey before, maybe they could have taken him to Africa as an "honorary Socceroo" all expenses paid of course for all entourage, now that would have been half way, and something else.

Posted by: carmella 21st Jun 2010, 09:12am

I agree with you Tori and Joey's enthusiasm for life might have rubbed off on some of the England team LOL - and they may even have won a game by this stage LOL.

Posted by: wee davy 21st Jun 2010, 09:38am

uh? huh.gif England Team? - enthusiasm? - does not compute - does not compute error error error warning - insufficient memory left laugh.gif
