The Great Eastern on Duke Street???

Well spotted Jim. I wracked my mind trying to remember this place, even asked my wife if she could recall it but neither of us got it, but I'm pretty sure you are right !

Yes Isobel,there was a homeless shelter in Greendyke St,just near our old school,a lot of derelicts hung about there all day and night.

My pal owned a pub in Orr St. it used to be called the "Highland Crofters", but we changed the name to "Whispers" in the hope of attracting a more younger crowd. Apparently it worked, because on a Monday morning we would have quite the procession of girls in the uniform of Charlotte St. School lined up at the door waiting to pay off their bar bill, in cash mind you nothing else! They were very honest wee lassies, except on a Saturday night when they lied about their age to get into the bar/club

In the late 60s I had a job as a driver for the Corpy Laundry and Disinfecting station in Bilsland Drive and as part of the job we lifted all the laundry at the deedle-dodles.In addition we also uplifted infested bed linen which had been "smeaked" by the public health worker.
One day my mate,an old timer and I got sent to North Woodside D-D to uplift some stuff.At that time the derelicts would congregate round an old fashioned fire/oven at the bottom of the stairs which had metal railings and spikes.Anyway my mate went up picked the big bundle and shouted over for the guys to move before he dropped it.Needles to say the bundle caught on a spike,ripped opened and caused the linen,lice and white powder to cascade down giving the derelicts a white shower.I was helpless,we nearly got our books but the matter was sorted and all the derelicts came up to Ruchill where they got a lysol bath and a new set of kit.We had to drive about 20 of them back to the deedle-dodle in the back of the van,all spic and span. What a job,there was never a dull moment.The worst of them all was Moncur Street a manky filthy hole I hated going to.

Jupiter, I worked for bennies lifts on moncur st and cant remember the hostel on that st. i was in and out quite a few of them as some of them had lifts but i just cant recall the one on moncur st.

Jupiter you are spot on, there was a homeless hostel in moncur street, it was a womans hostel and
hear is a article about the closure. it is mentioned in the last paragraph.

Moncur Street was the male hostel and Inglefield Street was the womens accomodation as well as the Sally Ann on the Clyde Street.

I remember the salvation army hostel on london road, down from the barras near glasgow cross, that was back in the early 70s

The Bellgrove Hotel is still on Gallowgate and has been just tarted up, on the outside at least, in the for the waste of money games. Mary

It was THE GREAT EASTERN on Duke Street, I worked at Tennets Brewery, a chap who worked beside me, lived there, I visited him once.

Hi, I know that there was a mens' hostel called Clyde St Home and it was situated in Abercromby St no. 324. It was near the Barras. My Grandfather died there.
