Aw, I was born in Lennox Castle! I wondered why, since we lived in Townhead, round from Rottenrow (where my 5 siblings were born) but Mum died before I remembered to ask her. Mum said that Dad phoned the hospital to find out how Mum was and was told he had a son. When he arrived, he got a bit of a surprise (shock, probably) to find John Junior was actually a girl.

No, but I worked there from 1978 to 81 as the head forester with a dozen or so 'trusted' patients used as free labour in the guise of therapy - under a male charge nurse by the name of Bob.

Bob, (didn't know his surname) was a very nice bloke with an immense interest and knowledge of everything Scottish. Not only the local history of the area, but of Scotland in general. I learnt an immense amount from a very lovely man.

At the time he'd be in his late 50's or early 60's, very 'stout' with an incredibly gentle voice, and an addiction to tea from the the fresh water of the hill.

It was at the time of Sam Hendry and his horrible missus. Most of their kids were lovely but the last two were wee shites. The first three children were a parents dream, gentle, honest and loyal. Obviously took off their dad.

I think the missus had a Polish name?

I was born in Lennox Castle in 1946. I always wondered why my mum, who lived in Royston, had me in Lennox Castle, rather than a hospital nearer to her home.

My understanding is that it became a mental hospital after I was born!!. No comments please. I was born in 1950 and at that time it was still a "Normal" Hospital, though from what my mum says it, and its staff should have been certified years before. There is a web site about the hospital and loads of info

no it was a mental aslylum before becoming a maternity and continued to be a mental institution..

I had two cousins born in Lennox Castle.. it started off as a big country house belonging to the gentry then was transformed intae a mental hospital. but became a maternity as well as asylum in the 50s and 60s.. Im no sure how long it stayed open for maternity.. never liked the place, it gave me the creeps... I had ma weans in Robroyston and Belivdere in the 60s and when they wanted tae paint the ward we were aw shunted tae Duke st for the rest of oor stay in hospital.... a hid ma last wean in Rottenrow.. before it closes..
