My wife and I were in a restaurant the other day. The voice of Frank Sinatra filled the room. He was singing a song, with words that made me think of my past.

They went,

"When I was 17 that was a very good year
A very good year for country girls" etc.

Then he went on to sing,

"When I was 21 that was a very good year
A very good year for city girls" etc.

I am now 85. I thought back to when I was 17.
The girl I was in love with was sitting across the table from me now,
aged 84.

And then I thought back to when I was 21.
It was a very mixed year for me.

I had just finished my engineering apprenticeship, and for a birthday present
I received a letter from Her Majesty's government stating that I would be receiving instructions
and railway tickets for my trip to Malvern Barracks in Worcester, where I would join the Royal Engineers for two years. Six months later, prior to me going to Germany, we were married.

Now that I am much older, songs that get to me are songs by the likes of Walter Huston, singing
"The Autumn Leaves". I now fully understand the meaning of those words.

What a nice post Danny, and how true. When we were young we warbled away at all the lovely songs, just enjoying the sound of the music, the words were just "there",but in maturity, you`re quite right, the words really were more significant than the tune. There are a lot of songs I can relate to in my own life. Of course the sad songs are the worst,I try not to dwell on the relevence in them. smile.gif
