Jagz, I don’t think the Basques would give a damn about your opinion of them.

Let’s just wait and see what happens if Scotland applies for EU membership, and how Spain responds to that application for membership. A bit of an expert in these matters aren’t you.

Danny

I'm sure the Basques wouldn't, but my point is still valid.

I never claimed to be an expert (i'll leave that to you) i can only give an opinion with the information that i have read and that was that Spain wouldn't have a problem with us joining the EU which i provided the link to the Spanish Foreign ministers direct quote.

Can you provide a link to any Spanish government official backing up your claim that Spain would veto Scotlands EU application?

The Basque country was no more an independent country than the Kingdoms of Strathclyde and Northumbria that straddled what are now two different countries, the County of Barcelona was part of the Kingdom of Aragon, none of which are relevant in todays world as to what is recognised as modern independent countries.

And did either of these 'countries' enter into an equal union treaty with Spain?

Like i said, they are not comparable to the situation that Scotland and England are in.

It's a complete outrage that World Rugby allowed this game to go ahead. We should have been left to feel bitter about getting unfairly thrown out of the competition with months (if not years) of feeling aggrieved at the injustice of it all tongue.gif

We could always have blamed hurricane Haggis. biggrin.gif
If Japan play the way they did against SA then they will do well, they are fast and disciplined. Japan getting through will really promote rugby in the region.

All I was saying was that they did well. I didn’t say it should have gone ahead!

Jagz you say that Catalonia and the Basque Country were never Independent countries like Scotland and England.

So you are an expert historian now. If you care to do some research you will find that the Basques predate Spain. In fact, The Basque’s predate the Romans, and are said to be the oldest race in Europe.

Unlike much of Scotland and England, the Basques still speak their original language. The Basque Country actually extends into part of France

So you see the Basques are not a breakaway area of Spain. If it ever comes to Scotland asking to be accepted into the EU, it will be interesting to see if Spain supports Scotland’s application. I most very likely will not be around when and if that occasion arises, so I will never know.

What I will say with confidence is, the Spanish government will be inviting trouble from the Basques and Catalonia if they support Scotland ‘s application.

I totally enjoyed that game, and thought our guys gave a decent shot at it regardless!

Hope SA do well on the 20th thumbup.gif
