Glasgow Boards/Forums _ Technical Support _ General Boards Technical Issues

Posted by: d.c. 13th Jul 2009, 04:37pm

I have been finding the boards very slow in recent days, and especially this evening. Pages are taking several minutes to open. Is it just me, or is everyone having the same problem ?

Posted by: 27stowst 13th Jul 2009, 05:12pm

I've been the same for a few days now. Thought it was something to do with me at first but other sites running ok.

Posted by: Elma 13th Jul 2009, 05:35pm

Oh good, thought it was me again!! I've been on here for over an hour when I should be doing some housework, the laundry does itself, thank goodness........... nearly lunch-time, have enjoyed my morning with a wee bit of frustration laugh.gif

Posted by: angel 13th Jul 2009, 08:04pm

same here and no problem with other sites.

Posted by: wee sammy 13th Jul 2009, 08:05pm

i think it is the elastic band it is stretched to the last. Time for a new laugh.gif one laugh.gif

Posted by: Tam blair 13th Jul 2009, 10:22pm

That's why we are seeing a lot of double posts. Patience is a virtue. biggrin.gif

Posted by: GG 15th Jul 2009, 08:22pm

Apologies all, there have been a few problems over the last couple of weeks and I have fixed a couple, but am still looking into a longer-term solution. Hopefully the temporary fix will see us through until I can make a wider change.

For the technically-minded like wee sammy, I've wrapped sellotape around the elastic band and crossed my fingers! laugh.gif

No disrespect GG, but although speeds have now improved, that seems to be a very amateurish temporary repair. Surely anyone with any technical expertise would know that after wrapping sellotape around the elastic band, you then need to secure the whole thing with blu-tack.

Posted by: TeeHeeHee 15th Jul 2009, 11:24pm

In the Air Force we used to give technical devices the "drop test".
That usually showed good results ... taking the 3% fail quotient into consideration.

Posted by: glasgow lass 17th Jul 2009, 04:00pm

well if that elastic bands done , maybe Anne1 will give us one of her garters to use. laugh.gif tongue.gif

Posted by: ashfield 17th Jul 2009, 06:43pm

Is it no something to do with how you stick your tongue out when you hit the post button? It will probably be a valve but if you're stuck at GG let us know and we'll have a whip round for some gaffer tape. As the saying goes.....when I nod ma heid, hit it laugh.gif

One thing I would suggest is that anyone who is using the Internet Explorer (IE) browser should – if they are able – consider changing their browser to Firefox, as it is much faster at displaying pages on Glasgow Guide (and many other sites). The main reason for this is that Firefox can begin to display a multi-table page long before if has downloaded the entire page, unlike IE, which struggles to do this at speed.

You can download the free software here:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html

English (Windows) version direct link:
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-3.5.1&os=win&lang=en-GB

During installation you'll get the option to transfer your settings that you had in IE. The downside is that you will have to log back into all the sites you have a username and password for (like Glasgow Guide) the first time you accesss them in Firefox.

You will see a real diffence in speed though!

(That said, I'm still working on improving the general speed of the boards.)

GG

Posted by: d.c. 20th Jul 2009, 09:39pm

Thanks GG. I have just downloaded Firefox and although it might take a bit of getting used to, it certainly makes things faster on this and several other sites that I have visited so far.

Is that whits called " a technical sight" laugh.gif

Posted by: mitchell 23rd Jul 2009, 10:36pm

I have been on Firefox for years it is a good system, in which you will be notified if anything needs updated.

Posted by: d.c. 24th Jul 2009, 10:31am

I must say that with Firefox, I am now noticing improved speeds even on sites where I wasn't actually previously aware of any speed problems. It just seems to be generally faster, but I suppose it may differ for other users depending on computer spec.

Posted by: 27stowst 24th Jul 2009, 10:44am

I've been on Firefox for a year or so and think it's great . smile.gif

Posted by: d.c. 27th Jul 2009, 11:49am

I am finding the boards really slow today, even on Firefox. All pages seem to be freezing, until the Google adverts in the right hand sidebar download.

Posted by: d.c. 3rd Aug 2009, 08:05pm

I have noticed the boards running slow again today and like last week, my impression is that it is something to do with the Google adverts on the right hand side of the page.

Whenever GG pages freeze, the progress bar shows various Google URLs downloading very slowly, with names such as googleads, googleadclick, googlesyndication, google-analytics, etc.

Hate to bring this up again, but is anyone else finding GG slow to load this weather? I've been experiencing speed problems for a couple of weeks now.
I've tweaked firefox to the hilt and still find the boards slow. Other sites are A OK.

Cheers,

Posted by: Jupiter 16th Jul 2010, 02:51am

It could be that PCs are being slowed up because too many applications are being run in the background. These come on when you start up your PC and definately slow it down.In Windows XP and Vista it is possible to delete Temporary Internet files which will a lso slow down the PC.
Hope this helps.

Good Good smile.gif

One point I failed to mention is... when waiting for GG to load, a message can be seen in the lower left corner of the page stating "Waiting For GGDB To Load" which is normal. However, since GG has become slower the message also now includes "Waiting on Google". This possibly may have a bearing on the problem.
Plus of course there's a fair old amount of graphics in the site which, at times, can slowdown loading.

Good point Joop, everyone should delete these files. I delete them once a week, at the minimum.

Aye, things can get very slow at times but ah don't think it's anythin tae dae wi peoples' PCs - the GG board seems tae be the only wan affected, at least in ma experience. Ah've even logged off a few times rather than sit through the interminable wait when ah want tae post.

Posted by: GG 25th Jul 2010, 08:45pm

Hi All,

Just to let you know that I am still working on this situation to improve the sped of the boards. I apologise to everyone, however, I am sure it will be resolved and we will have a speedy system again fairly soon. That said, I intend to be working on it this week, so there may be sime disruption in the meantime. Please stick in there.

GG.

Posted by: mitchell 25th Jul 2010, 09:54pm

Martin, that roller caption that you have near the top of the page would be using up a bit of time to get the pages up and running.
Why don't you omit it for a few days to see how it runs?

Posted by: Elma 26th Jul 2010, 03:17am

Posted by: GG 8th Aug 2010, 08:41pm

Hi Anne,

If you are being logged out then you should check that you don't have any software (Windows Washer, etc.) that is 'cleaning' (deleting) cookies. The glasgowguide.co.uk cookie is needed to keep you logged in by saving your username and password so that you don't have to keep typing it in when you visit.

We need to know mellow.gif

Posted by: Jupiter 22nd Jul 2011, 01:08pm

I was unable to access the site this evening and footered about a bit and eventually got the maintenance message.Fair does, but perhaps in future a wee bit notice would be in order as I thought it might have been a prob with the ISP.
In saying that this is the first time Ive been denied access for essential maintenence.

Posted by: benny 22nd Jul 2011, 03:16pm

Couldnae get oan this mornin either. Like Joop, ah thought it might be an ISP problem, because ah've been gettin drapped connections quite frequently recently.

GG, just had a wee trial from several PCs and each time I return to the boards I'm having to use my user name and password log on again. It's obviously not a PC problem but could be the dreaded AOL, is anyone else having a problem?

I tried the Soutbox:

and it seems to be working – you type in your shout and then click the 'Shout' button next to the text area for the shout. You can then also click the '[Ref]' button just to make sure the shouts refresh.

Please let me know if you have success in shouting.

Firstly. If i am using the "quote button" to reply to a post how do i highlight just the part of the post which is relevant to my response. I've tried highlighting etc like i would use on "word" but nothing seems to work

The second point is simpler. What is the "multi" button for. Its next to the reply and quote buttons so i would assume it has something to do with replying

I would be most grateful if anyone could help on this. Thanks Doug

Found this Doug.

Quoting Posts

Displayed below each post in a topic, there is a 'Quote' button. Pressing this button will allow you to reply to a topic, and have the text from a particular reply quoted in your own reply. When you choose to do this, an extra text field will appear below the main text input box to allow you to edit the content of the post being quoted.

Hope this helps. smile.gif

Hi Doug1,

As Melody wrote, you first need to click the 'quote' button below the post. This will include all the quoted message in your own post. After that you can select the relevant text (highlight it) and click the 'b' (bold) or 'i' (italics) button to make the relevant part stand out. Most people just delete the part of the quoted message which is not required, however remember to keep the opening and closing quote tags...

CODE
[quote name='tamhickey' date='10th Jun 2012, 06:42am' post='3578363']...[/quote]

The 'multi' button can be used when you are responding to different messages in the one post. You click the multi button a number of times then click the 'add reply' button and all the quotations will be in the one post, ready for you to add your text. I'm not sure how useful it is though as can get a bit confusing.

Any other queries, please just let me know.

GG.

Thanks Melody.
Not too sure if we have this one yet. I have used the quote button a lot since joining GG and its pretty straight forward with the entire quoted text showing in your reply, but lets say the quoted text you are replying to is very long and winded and you only really want to reply to a small part of it for example a few lines or maybe just one paragraph then how do you do this? or indeed can you do this? it may well be that it cant be done

Doug

I tried the Soutbox:

http://discuss.glasgowguide.co.uk/index.php?autocom=shoutbox

and it seems to be working – you type in your shout and then click the 'Shout' button next to the text area for the shout. You can then also click the '[Ref]' button just to make sure the shouts refresh.

Please let me know if you have success in shouting.

Thanks, Ken, Some years ago, a number of members asked that topics from some forums were removed from the New Posts and Today's Topics - the 'Chat Threads' being one example. I think the feeling at the time was that they 'got in the way'. I, therefore, removed them from the listings, but I think it probably makes sense to add them back in.

Anyone any thoughts on this?

I hope I'm at least in the right place for HELP! because I'm extremely frustrated.

Problem. This morning I received a PM from Java. Tonight I attempted to respond but did so as a new message. My efforts are in vain. There is no such person (member) as Java or java. I know her given name is Margaret but her user name is Java or is it java.

Would you please ask those little green elves who are hiding behind the screen to get off their little donkeys, find Java/java in the membership list and send my PM? PLEASE

Thank you
boots

Posted by: ashfield 18th Mar 2014, 08:12am

Boots, the easiest way to return a message to someone who has sent you a message is to open it and tap the little box at the bottom right which says "reply". It will allow you to type a message back to Java.

Posted by: boots 19th Mar 2014, 07:15am

Thank you Ash, that is the easiest and almost guaranteed method of getting your PM on its way. The problem arose because I didn't do that, hopefully I'll never make that mistake again. Nevertheless I did not anticipate a problem arising over the spelling of Java/java. I wouldn't feel so bad if I were instructed on what I had to do to get my message on its way. My attempts have failed miserably. I really do appreciate your concern, thanks again boots

Posted by: ashfield 19th Mar 2014, 08:36am

Boots, I do not underestimate how complex or frustrating computer can be. I have had (and still occasionally get) problems with how things work.

Other ways to send a PM, tap on the user name (Java, for instance appears as the opening poster on Dear Diary) and their profile will open. On the right of the screen it says "send a message", tap that and the message screen will open with the recipient already in the top box. You must then type a title in the box just above the one that holds your message.

Alternatively, from the main screen, tap the top right where it says "new PMs". Your messages (even if there are none) will appear and tap top left where it says "new message". You will be in the message screen but this time you need to type in the recipients name in the box before going on as above. Hope that helps.

By the way, Java really does exist (apparently laugh.gif )

Posted by: Dave Grieve 19th Mar 2014, 09:54am

Why cant I change my personal photo? I tried reducing it down to 150 x 200 and it refused I then cut it down to the recommended 150 x 150 and it refused with the message to contact an administrator

Posted by: carmella 23rd Mar 2014, 02:21pm

A wee piece of frustration that I have come across in recent months, is that whenever someone posts a picture - myself included, which may turn out to be too large.
That picture (one assumes) causes freezing of the page it has been posted on, yet I have noticed that some people can still post, as if the page has not 'frozen' on their machines - I find this very odd.

I'm frustrated as I keep getting a window up asking me if I want to wait or kill the pages.

Any info would be greatfully received?????

Posted by: d.c. 23rd Mar 2014, 07:07pm

Carmella, I may be completely wrong, but I am wondering if it may be related to the animated gifs that you are using in your posts. Two of them appear as a signature in all of your posts and as they are hosted on an external site rather than on GG, any problems or slowness on that external site could cause similar problems with your posts here.

I haven't noticed the problem on this site before, but I have found it on other sites when the pages appear to hang waiting for external gifs to load.

You could maybe rule that in or out as a possibility by disabling or removing the gifs temporarily to see if it helps.

Posted by: carmella 30th Mar 2014, 07:28am

Hi there d.c. - not seen you for a while now. Actually, I think you're right, but I have also noticed it elsewhere on the GG even on topics I've read but not posted on.

I no longer use some of the gifs, so maybe that will help.

Thanks for your information.

You're not the only one carmella, i use chrome and on some pages it locked up and i get the kill message, using firefox i have no problem, i noticed on going to the same pages that pictures were posted.

Posted by: d.c. 30th Mar 2014, 03:55pm

I don't use Chrome, but I have found before that this site performs better with Firefox than with Internet Explorer.

Posted by: carmella 30th Mar 2014, 07:25pm

I have used chrome since it first csme out. To be honest I've never thought of using IE since. I've never used Firefox which has been around for a long time and, I believe, is very much liked by those who use it.

Posted by: Doug1 30th Mar 2014, 08:13pm

I've used Chrome for many years now and like it a lot but I also have to use Explorer as I find that Twitter for one occasionally wont for whatever reason load onto Chrome but when I swap over to IE it loads perfectly. The nuisance is that I now have to duplicate many of my bookmarks onto both browsers. Such is life!

Posted by: carmella 2nd Apr 2014, 06:56am

I still haven't indulged in Facebook or Twitter, which I know are very popular, but every time I switch my computer on, and this is something I've just noticed in the past few months, I get a window asking me to sign in to Google backup - which I've never done, so I just quit and carry on.

Question is this - has anyone ever used Google Backup, and if so, is it any better or more useful than the backup already on my computer?

Just in case the pop ups are not directly related to this site, it might be worth downloading MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware and running some scans, if you don't already use them. CCleaner is also another good program to help keep your pc running smoothly.

All of them are free, and although they may offer you paid/professional/premium versions, the free versions are more than adequate:

https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/

http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE

Just be careful to untick any preticked options to include Google Chrome or any other downloads that you may not want.

I assume you already use a free anti virus program ?

CCleaner should find stuff to remove every time you run a scan, such as temp files, cookies, obsolete log files, etc. It used to be called CrapCleaner, and that's exactly what it does to your pc.

MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware scans should detect any potential problems, such as tracking cookies, or any malware or spyware that may be causing those unwanted pop ups.

Some folk run scans every day, but once a week might be enough depending on your web usage.

sounds like you've downloaded something that has an adbot in it mate.

do a virus scan to get rid of it.

also make sure your anti virus has a browser app for it....avast is a good free one.

then make sure you have an adblock extension on your browser.

sounds like you've downloaded something that has an adbot in it mate.

do a virus scan to get rid of it.

also make sure your anti virus has a browser app for it....avast is a good free one.

then make sure you have an adblock extension on your browser.

I can tell you how to do all that if your no sure.

Hi ktv I use ATG anti virus and this updates daily with a scan daily, no joy, I downloaded Malwarebytes anti malware and did a scan, no joy.

I am now getting unasked for banner strips coming up advertising various products as well as the highlighted hyperlinks what do you suggest?

Posted by: ktv 17th Sep 2014, 07:16am

what browser are you using mate?

avg an mwb probably wont find an adbot as its probably installed in your browser toolbar as part of a legit add on.

look through your toolbar extensions and see if theres anything new.

Dave, it might help to clear out your cookies. They get left sometimes when you use some web pages. I know how to do it on my own PC but not sure how to explain the process to you. Perhaps another board user can? It does have the effect of clearing some of your web preferences which may mean having to search for them again.

I'm probably in the wrong place, but I do need advice.

My connecting/loading symbol stops unless I keep the cursor moving.

Only last three days.

Any advice to rectify?

Davie.

Are the boards going very slowly today or is it just me unsure.gif

I got the Windaes 10 update a couple of days ago so it could be that (or Martin forgetting to put a shullin' in the gas meter laugh.gif )

Seriously folks...........is anyone else having problems? It's taking ages for me to log on and, when I get on, everything is going slow. I don't have problem with any other web site so it's not the device.

No problems here, Ash. Must be the weather. smile.gif

How is Windows 10, Ash? Have you noticed any other problems? I'm still waiting for it but a bit nervously.

Posted by: ashfield 2nd Aug 2015, 02:46pm

Betsy, Window 10 seems fine except I can't find anything unsure.gif I've no interest in either face recognition or spending my time talking to a computer so it's just business as usual as far as I'm concerned. The download took bit of time, perhaps 40 minutes, but it was up and running thereafter.

Can't figure it out. No problems with any other web site and, despite trying different devices, this one if just running very slow. Maybe I forgot to pay my subs laugh.gif

Windows 10 is far better than 8/8.1, the tablet experience i can do well without on a PC. It's still not as good as the old xp/win7 setup and is more of a hybrid between the 2. Maybe i should get with the times and accept programs are now called 'apps', and that easy to navigate start menu meant control panel, my vids/music/documents where right there instead of hidden somewhere possibly behind a tile. I suppose it's either a case of getting used to it or trying to set it all up the way i like it

Thanks Ash.
I've been talking to my PC for years but I don't think I want it to talk back to me.

some right dodgy security, privacy issues on w10

sharing your wifi password with all your contacts by default, your net might become sluggish due to its WUDO (Windows Update Delivery Optimization) running like a torrent site (yes really) etc etc...

it does look good though but youl need to tweek the life out of the stings to make it decent and secure

Posted by: Betsy2009 4th Aug 2015, 10:36am

OK - thanks ktv.
I don't want to share my passwords with anything/one!
Not even the ones that I actually remember! dry.gif
