The last remaining scheduled Glasgow street party to celebrate the royal wedding has been cancelled due to lack of interest. The organisers of the now-abandoned street celebration, the Shettleston Historical Society, originally planned street festivities to coincide with the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middelton on April 29th, 2011. The chairman of the society, Tony Jaconelli, 77, lamented:

"In this neck of the woods, a street party about celebrating anything to do with royalty is a bit of a no no.
If it had been about Celtic or Rangers winning the treble, I guess there would have been a lot of demand.
There is some support for the royal couple but not to the extent of having a street party, so we gave up on the idea.
We have instead written to the couple to ask if we can use their photograph on a booklet of important local marriages which we may produce."
Despite the apparent lack of interest, Glasgow City Council has passed a one-hour extension to licensed premises on the Friday evening so that Glaswegians will have ample time to partake in a fitting toast to the young couple.
Benevolent council bosses have also joined 20 of Scotland's 32 councils to grant the city's hard-pressed public service workers an extra day's holiday.
At least a dozen street parties are expected to take place in Edinburgh.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed to hear the street party in Glasgow has been cancelled. Here in Victoria, BC. the Fairmont Empress hotel is putting on a gala "authentic" British Royal Wedding breakfast. Everyone is encouraged to turn up at 3:00 am in PJ's and the hotel is supplying a "white fluffy robe." Large screen TV's will be located around the room.
Ok Glasgow, hop on a plane and we'll see you here. Love to meet you all. Oh the price: a measly CN $39. I'm sure they're will be some Arbroath Kippers! Ayrshire bacon etc..... see ya here.

Being a Glaswegian,I am not surprised at the cancellation of a party when it is linked to anything concerning the Royal family. No love lost there.
However,here we have a young couple about to be married with all the hopes and dreams that no doubt most of us had when planning our own nuptials. I wish them every happiness despite their every move being put under a microscope. I do not envy them their position in life.
Have fun at the tea Party Victoria B.C. If I wasn't away at the other end of Canada, I would be there. Instead,I will drag myself out of bed to enjoy every moment of this happy event.

Can anyone remember street partys in Glasgow for anything Royal, I cant having said that I have noticed that one bowling club close to me is having a Royals wedding tv watch, perhaps there are more that I dont know about. Over the years, I have watched Princess Margarets, Charles and Lady Diana's weddings on TV ( in Italy of all places, very hard to get into a pub to see it, mobbed) but if the sun is shining I will be in the garden, if its raining I will be on the PC Best of luck to the young couple
I do not agree with everything royal by any means ,hunting for example. I do however think that certain things in the royal family are good for tradition in this country. My parents were royalists both from Glasgow and to a certain extent so am I and I certainly wish them a happy future.
