Anyone out there know when McNeil Gardens, Turnlaw Street, Benthall Street, Waterside Street and Birch Street were built? I THINK it must've been after 1913/14?
Do you remember a biscuit factory in McNeil Street? Do you know what it was called?

Hi KateB, Turnlaw st and Benthall st are almost the last streets in Gorbals, well actually Hutchesontown. They both run parallel to Ballatter st and stop at the River Clyde. Both streets are still there . I would hazard a guess that these houses were built in the 20s. I work in Gorbals housing, I will ask around for you. Birch st may well be older as I am sure there are newer houses on that area now, again I can check it out for you. Mcneil gardens is a new one on me, cant say that I have heard that one. Valoros was right about the COOP being in McNeil st Bye for now, Norrie

The huge bakery of UCWS was demolished in 1973. It occupied the block encompassing McNeil Street, Ballater Street, Adelphi Street and Moffat Street. It was built between 1896-1916. I do recall walking through Glasgow Green in November 1985, and seeing a red brick building across from St Andrews suspension bridge. It was worse for wear, but standing. Two months later, in January 1986, walking in Green again I heard a distant rumble. Sure enough, the building I got some shaky and unclear pictures of, was being demolished. It got me wondering, what was it? certainly looked big enough, but bakery was definitely demolished in 1973. only recall a date of 1928 on it.

The houses you refer too, first tenants moved in 1927. How I know this, my parents got offered there or Govanhill in 1927 from slum clearance of Jane Place in Pollok Street(a throughway) off Paisley Rd. Co-incidentally I married a chap from Turnlaw St.

THANK YOU ALL!.
I'm doing my family history and found my g/mother worked at some bakery in McNeil Street, in the early 1900s, and in 1941 lived in Benthall Street. I thought she might have been in Benthall Street since they were built - now I can investigate further!
To Stratson: My Mum lived in Turnlaw Street, too, and later lived in the warden controlled flats in McNeil Street, on the very site where the bakery had been. Small world, eh?
