THH and Mary. In honour of Germany's fourth World Cup win I have increased the number of emoticons to four!

Very well done the Nationalmannschaft!

Well done Germany, they are worthy winners of the tournament. The final was pretty much as I expected, a close game with few chances. Truth be told, I found it boring until it moved into extra time.

Laughed at the numpty BBC news reporter who went on about what England could learn from the successful German team, the answer is the same as they learned from the successful Spanish team last time, Italy the time before...........nothin' laugh.gif

Congratulations to Germany. Ultimately, and for their performances over the tournament, they were worthy winners. I do spare a thought for the Argentinians, who gave them a run for their money, but missed so many chances that would have changed the situation. They were also badly let down by Messi. I am a longtime admirer, but his lacklustre play here and in the semi-final, make his award of the Ballon d'Or a travesty. Hopefully he will soon return to his best form, but he certainly could not claim to be the best in the world on this showing. My sympathy also extends to Brazil, a great and proud football nation, who drastically need to go back to the drawing-board. As for the ever cockeyed optimists, England.............

Well that's it all over for another four years. I have enjoyed the whole extravaganza... great entertainment! Yesterday's final game was a display of superb fitba'. The outcome could have gone either way, but Germany came out on top and I don't see anything wrong with that... oh yes, they, the Germans in general, not really the players that I'm aware of, tend perhaps to be a touch arrogant, but then maybe they have a right to be.

I found the actual final game was particularly entertaining because we had a display of two distinctly different types of football: the German text-book methodical passing and the Argentinien more daring style and I feel, a better form of entertainment for the spectator. The name of the game is to win and Germany won; but, I believe it would be a mistake to assume this win suggests which of the two soccer styles is better. I don't think it is: the one-two-three pass, Teutonic style, is more likely to lead to boredom than the much more doon-the-middle, dash up the wings, Argentinean fitba' style.

Congratulations are due the host nation for a perfect world cup programme. Tough that the nation's football fans themselves had to suffer such humiliation from their team's action on the pitch; but no matter, the running of the games, contrary to what the media had forecast, was extremely well done and I say bravo to Brasil!.

Quite right, Dugald. The British media were full of tales of woe, sprinkled with a bit of Schadenfreude. Such is the nature of the beast !

Enjoyed the first half of the final; was bored by the second half. It picked up though for extra -time and that goal was a smasher.
There's no football on tv tonight - what will we all do?
