So, 3000000 shiny new silver 50p to rub our noses in it celebrate leaving the EU. Perhaps five zeros too many under the circumstances eyebrow.gif

I remember ehen the 50p coin was introduced about 50 years ago. I gave one as a tip on a visit to Amsterdam, carefully explaining that this was something new, The waiter looked less than impressed although 50p could buy considerably more in those days. How far will 50p go these days? It must cost more to mint them!

The waiter looked less than impressed because you had offended him. 50p would not have bought him anything. You insulted him. Sums you up.

By the way, you have a habit of referring to me as being an old demented man. So the reality is you you are no spring chicken yourself. Only a miserable old git would have given a waiter a 50 pence tip, 50 years ago!

Danny

P.S. I see the three Amigos are having a great revival. Funny how two of you don’t live in the UK, but are full of the usual garbage. Will the both of you be coming home to join the protest marches?

By my reckoning (I'm only an accountant!) 50p 50 years was worth 7.05 GBP. surely not to be sniffed at , by the sniffiest of waiters!

surely the waiter in Amsterdam was annoyed because it was British money and not Dutch money, nothing to do with the value of it.

A pint of beer was the equivalent of 14p in 1970, £3.10 average today so that would be a tip of around £10 in today's money, clearly Danny must have a fantastic pension if he can turn his nose up a a tenner tip. wink.gif

Bilbo, I think Taurus has given the reason why the waiter was annoyed.

You say you are only an accountant. Does that mean you are not a chartered accountant? Perhaps that explains the reason that you gave the prices of commodities in the UK at that time. The waiter lived in Holland. Was he to go to the UK to spend the 50p?

I remember ditching any coins I had when I was coming home from Europe because the I couldn’t get them exchanged in the UK at the travel agency..So perhaps that would be why the waiter was unhappy.

The bottom line is you were discourteous to the waiter by your action.

Danny

I'm pretty sure there would have been Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam in 1970 Taurus. laugh.gif

What has any of that have to do with a British 50 P I wonder.
