I wonder how many Scottish owner-occupiers in their former council thank Mrs Thatcher for their opportunity to buy their own home. It was she who introduced the "Right to buy" legislation and approx 2 million homes were bought in this way. rolleyes.gif
For all you turf followers,Thatcherite runs at the 5.10 at Southall today.A popular choice Im sure.

Not many Joop, i have a friend who as a lifelong Labour supporter hates Mrs T with a passion, but i have great fun winding him up about how his late parents bought their council house, which he now lives in.

The veins in his neck almost burst when i tell him he should get down on his knees and thank the good lady, some people are easily wound up biggrin.gif

Thatcher's council house sell-off benefited some, but:
QUOTE
... The average age of a first-time buyer fell to around 25 when Mrs T was in her pomp; it has now climbed to 37; the National Housing Federation forecasts that it could soon rise to 43. The postwar trend of more owning and less renting is sharply reversing. ... The social housing sold off by Mrs Thatcher was never replaced. House building in the last year of Gordon Brown fell to a postwar low. ...

Good article on this subject in the Guardian:

Thatcher's dream becomes a nightmare for a jilted generation

He was quoted as having said this in the Metro and a couple of other Newspapers

Thatcher named most influential woman of all time in poll

Margaret Thatcher has beaten the Queen and the first female Nobel Prize winner to be named the most influential woman of all time, according to a poll.

Over a quarter (28%) of people said the only female UK prime minister was more influential than scientist Marie Curie (24%) and the Queen, Britain's longest serving monarch, (18%), in an Opinium poll of 2,004 adults commissioned by Scottish Widows. ...

In terms of influence, Adolf Hitler is probably the "most influential man of all time". Enough said?

Hi Martin, I was just thinking how actually Maggie almost pales into insignificant moderation when compared with the Tories of today. In many ways today's shower of Tories in power have and do go far further in their war against the working class and I'm no pal of that particular witch.

I agree Melody I think this Tory Government will go down in history as the one that destroyed the Welfare State and the saddest part about it is we're sitting back, watching it happen and doing nothing about it. The working class have been kidded on that if they have a mortgage, run a car and can afford to take a holiday that these cuts don't affect them yet many could be one payslip away from unemployment and its' consequences.

Mary, you have hit the nail on the head! A "them and us" attitude has been created and the mugs who vote Tory have been fooled into thinking they are part of the Establishment.

I always remember my dad saying that the working class were always only one pay packet away from desperation. When we are in the midst of all this glitter of commercialism gone mad and look down to see the souls sitting on the pavement it makes us want to weep for the desperation of it all. You are so correct Marydee, we are many and they are few and we should do something about it.

Yes, but previous governments always had a "fake" war on the go to cover their tracks and to distract the populous from what they were doing to the country and it's people.

Oh, wait...............

Thinking about the have's and the have not's yesterday on Argyle Street a fella in front of us bent down to a soul on the pavement and put some money in his cup. I said to my husband that the giving hand looked a bit in need of help himself and my husband said, ' Those with little often give most.' I wish that fella with the giving hand would be given an award for being an influential person but for good.

She is certainly among the most maligned women, here is a quote

"I think that the complete withdrawal of free milk for our school children would be too drastic a step and would arouse more widespread public antagonism than the saving justifies."

The removal of milk from some schoolchildren was actually started by Harold Wilson in 1968, when the Tories came to power in 1970 there was the usual post Labour financial mess to sort out.The Treasury wanted cuts in all depts. Thatcher actually saved free milk for younger children.

She was right about the public antagonism but it was her who got the brunt of it and the'Milk Snatcher' insult haunted her for the rest of her career.
