I remember, waaaay back as a teenager, this big hulkin' wuman comin' into our living room, no locked doors back then, in a Celtic strip and some kind of mask and rummaging through the old dears drawers, sideboard, while oor maw tried to work out who the hell it was. When her wee companion cracked out laughing at the uncertainty and worried look on mum's face it was gem's a bogey; games over.
Didn't we call it "huntigoot" back then? Or was that April Fool?

We used to go around in a mob at halloween. A right motley gang of sub 10 year olds, we must have been a terrifying sight. I always got loads of sweets as I was always the smallest and I could do Burns poetry.

My Granda used to put out the lights and recite in a slow gruff voice
My name is John, James Benjamin Barratt
I was stabbed in the neck with a rusty carrot
My home is down below, to the devil I must go
But I'll be back another night......
To give you all a bloody fright

Terrified me
