and once again , I have never come across in my travels , any remark's from others regarding my nationality , that asked if I was English , MAYBE IRISH , not that , that would bother me , to my mind it simply means that we are part of a great nation that is called , THE UNITED KINDOM

In that case Angel why did you not want to stay here in the UK if it is so great?

laugh.gif It must be Jagz. I just don't understand for the life of me why people who don't live in Scotland get so uptight as to whether or not we choose to be Independent.

that remark has been well and truly answered by me, several times
and that question is usualy asked when the poster really has nothing
worthwhile to say , so if you are looking for an answer , you will
find it in the Scottish Independence thread .

I don't really see the contradiction for folk who describe themselves as both Scottish and British Britain is an island, not a nationality.. We are all British, it's just that some of us would rather the U.K. was dissolved upon Independence.

At no time did the inhabitants of "Alba Longa" ever refereed to themselves as Britons. That was the name the Romans gave to all tribes living in the country. The idea of "Britishness and any reference to that word did not appear until the late 18th century. This was used to engage the "North Britains" as cannon fodder for an expanding empire. The Scottish name was abolished; "fareweel en' tae our Scottish name sae famed' in martial station" Burns.R. In the second world war M.P.s opposing appeasment called out to the "Chamberlains" in Westminster "To think of England first"
"There will always be an England" popular WW11 patriotic song.

The total idea of "Britishness" took root during the Second WW. Prior to that it was never used to define Scots, Irish Welsh and indeed no English man ever referred to him / herself as anything other than English ( unless he was in the navy). I personally have never known any Scot, Welsh, Irish or Englishman refered to themselves, other than with their racial identity, except in overseas pomposity as 'British".

Given the bare fact of the McCrone Report's existence and its shameful classification by Westminster in 1975 (a few months after the SNP tallied 30% of the Scottish vote in the October '74 general election), how can anyone in the UK government be taken seriously by Scotland?

Why do they think they are entitled to any credibility whatsoever? Does no one remember "fool me once, shame on you -- fool me twice, shame on me"???

... And here is one final thought for Scottish voters: Does anyone really believe that, having hidden the truth about North Sea oil revenues for several decades, the UK government would hesitate to classify information about, say, other lucrative seabed-based resources (link requires free registration to read article) lying underneath Scotland’s territorial waters in the same manner that the McCrone Report on North Sea oil revenues was suppressed in 1975?
