I had one of those cat-eaters, Taurus. She was called Laika. Her grande-Dam had been a wolf crossed with a German Shepherd to produce her mum who was crossed with a German Shepherd to produce Laika and her Brother Sancho.
Sancho looked every bit the wolf in colour and size but was a real pussy-cat of a dog. Laika, on the other hand, looked every bit the German Shepherd with lower hind-quarters; not good for the dog at all, but was every bit of her granny in her head. Mary used to crap herself when Laika ran towards her to greet her when we met in our "winching" days. She was OK with Benny, a Belgian Shepherd/German Shepherd cross and with something of a walt Disney's "Pluto" mentality.
Laika had a taste for cats it seemed ... until I introduced her to "Simba" a wee white ball-of-fluff of 6 weeks and said "Laika ... Baby" and she licked it.
German for licking is Lecken and German for tasting is Schmecken. I asked at the time when Laika licked the kitten, "Was that Lecken or Schmecken?"
She became a suragate mother to Simba from that moment on. I had great memories from those two among which when I'd go acoss stepping stones onto an island in the Rhein and just put the cats down to do what they wanted and later tell Laika to fetch the babies (Simba and his twin Sancho - a black ball of fluff) and off she'd go into the trees and bring them back one after the other.
Great days with great dogs ...

The wee guy in the middle is me 30 years ago tongue.gif

Laika on my left side in the picture and Benny of-the-long-tongue on my right.

My first ever son-in-law set up a camera on a tripod to take a delayed family group picture on a local mountain here then ran back to get into the picture before the shutter opened. Laika and Benny were lying at my feet ... Sorry Mark, I should have told you to walk back yes.gif

So glad for your lovely story instead of coming on this site and reading people being nasty to each other.

Good luck with Gunter sounds like he has found his forever home with you and Mary, lucky dog.

Thanks guest, nice of you to say so wink.gif

I took Gunter onto the River Rhein yesterday to visit some of my old haunts where I took Bonnie. For miles along the natural Rhein from the start of the Grande Alsace Canal right up to Freiburg, it is a building site where the Water Authority has ripped out a lot of the woodland to dig up tp 6 meter deep basins and plant new woodlands in them. This is to accomodate 3.2 million cubic meters of flood water and prevent cities further north from the devastating and costly floods that normally follow the heavy winters and spring melts starting off in Switzerland at the source of the Rhein near where it borders with Austria.

This information is simply to explain the hose which is seen tethered in the second of the following pictures tongue.gif

I used to sit for a half hour at this quiet spot with Bonnie on a nice day just to rest up a while.
Gunter seemingly found something of interest among the grass near the water's edge so went in to investigate ...

... suddenly Gunter, who can be a bit nervous sometimes, came dashing back to me ...

... after leaning that ducks live on the river.

Jut managed to catch the duck in flight after I caught Gunter in flight. laugh.gif

Much as we'd like to we couldn't dream of taking Gunter away from my mate Detlef; apart from which I prefer my dogs to have a lot more intelligence than Gunter who's lovely but ...? laugh.gif
My mate let us have him rather than put him in one of those Pooch Hotels while him and his good lady swan off on holiday in Corsica ... and we are very happy to be able to oblige.

Well,it's goodbye Gunter for a wee while. wink.gif

Detlef arrived around noon to collect him and take him back home to the Alsace.

A wonderful and very grateful dog who guarded our property as if it was his own biggrin.gif

Mind you, our remaining cat, Charlie, will be glad to see the back of him tongue.gif

Now I'll go and clean the garden up for the last time, takin' a poo bag or two with me laugh.gif
