"Ne'er cast a clout till May be out." Don't remove winter vests (undergarments) until summer arrives. one of my mothers expresions too, ""keep yer chest covered""" was another!!!! had to think about that one xxxx

cast before may ill all the way a never understood it as a wean but it meant if u take your clothes off before june you were ill all year who makes this stuff up

Stuarty, I dont think the saying has anything to do with being ill all year. Usually it was chilly up until the end of May so we wore warm clothing. Hopefully, after the end of May the climate would get warmer. Hence the saying "ne'er cast a cloot til May is oot." I'm fairly certain this is the origin of the saying. Over here in America white was not worn from July 4 through Labor Day at the beginning of September.
Think you will find this has nothing to do with May the month, but the May Hawthorn. "Until May is out" is actually referring to the blossom on the May Hawthorn. Once it's bloomed then it's considered mild enough to venture out without thick winter clothing.
