I used to go to school on the steam train , to Charing Cross- first from Carntyne and then from Mount Vernon. Later on I used the Blue Train from Airdrie to Queen Street, whwn I worked at the central Hotel in the 60s. I remember the signalman at Carntyne letting us change the signals with the big levers.
For a while I took the steam train in Coatbridge from Langloan to Central Station, for 1d in old money. The bus fare was 1 1/2d (that's a penny ha'penny) at the time and was a shorter walk to school, but 1/2d was worth saving.
