| Glasgow will host the city's biggest ever Art Fair this year. Organisers say a record number of galleries have applied to showcase work at what is now considered the most prestigious contemporary fair outside London. And advance tickets for the event, which takes place from April 19 to 22, have gone on sale for the first time online. A total of 43 galleries, including 11 from Glasgow, will be exhibiting work from 1000 artists, including rising star Catriona Millar whose work has won the support of high profile art collector Charles Saatchi.

Nine galleries will be showing for the first time in the white tented pavillions in George Square, including three from Glasgow.

Last year a record 16,000 visitors attended the Glasgow City Council event to admire and snap up original pieces of art priced from a few pounds to thousands.

More than 1200 pieces of art totalling £1.1million were sold.

One of the costliest buys was a piece of work by colourist FCB Cadell, which sold for £12,000.

Other hot items were five John Lennon prints which each sold from between £500-£3200.

Organisers say the increase in exhibitors last year was proof of the popularity of the event with galleries as well as buyers.

Lord Provost Liz Cameron said:
"The Glasgow Art Fair has been an essential part of Glasgow's thriving cultural life for more than a decade now."
