I have just watched a French fisherman on TV, saying that France needs at least 60% of our fishing rights in our waters after Brexit. If they don’t get that, they want compensation! Compensation from US for not getting to fish in OUR waters! Is it me, or is there something skewiff about that?!!!

Maybe Johnsons administration had made them promises like they did to Scottish fishermen? unsure.gif

Can't say that the topic of fishing rights is something I fully understand but it appears to be a complex issue. As I understand it, the UK government signed away rights to fish in UK waters back in the 70s, as part of the deal to get into the "common market". This basically gave 60% of the catch to other EU countries through the Common Fisheries Policy and, as far as I know, that deal is enshrined in international law. I guess the UK has probably lost the capacity to catch more fish given the numbers of trawlers that have gone. Currently about 60% of the fish landed in the UK is caught by non-UK registered boats.

No doubt the UK fishermen will get the same kind of consideration that our farming sector have got rolleyes.gif

I think the deal predates EU membership so isn't directly related. I could be wrong though (it has been known tongue.gif )
