Hallo from a newbie - now living in Sussex in England, but with many memories of living in Stonefield Avenue, off Kelvindale Road, in the mid-to-late forties. My father was a laboratory assistant at Kelvindale Paper Mill, and I used to go to Kelvinside Academy, a little school at the corner of Kelvindale Road and Cleveland Road - now gone. I came back to Glasgow in 2001 for the first time in 50 years, and it was fascinating to see the areas where I lived, played and went to school. I attended Hyndland School for a year before we moved back down to England in 1951.
Glasgow was very different then from now - it all seemed much dirtier, poorer (and larger!) - but I still managed to remember the route from Stonefield Avenue, up Balcarres Road (or was it Avenue?) to the Botanic Gardens, where my mother and I went for walks in the summer. And I particularly remember walking on the pink gravel pathways round the Kibble Palace and sitting for a rest by the side of the statues and large tropical plants.
Anyone else from round that area at that time?
