I was wondering if anyone remembers the Green Lady ? she came around and she would inspect your house to make sure it was kept clean ,If I remember right she would even look at the sheets on the beds ,I often wondered what would happen if your house was not clean? unsure.gif

The green lady was there to look after the well being of the young childen in a family, to see that they where being well cared for by their parents and not neglected.
She was also a great source of help to young mothers.
I have no idea if they are still going around but I thought they did a wonderful job
representing the rights of the young child..

You are dead right there Angel. I had a lovely green lady [can't remember her name] who came after my first child was born and checked up on his feeding, welfare etc. I also attended a clinic in Avenuepark Street, I think it was once every two weeks, where they weighed the babies and you had to strip them and put their clothes in a wee basin. I think they also got their vaccinations there too. [memory getting a bit rusty]! She never ever inspected my house [or wee room and kitchen as it was then].

I remember the Green Lady too. Didn't they wear a green hat that was like what the Girl Guides wore? Here in Canada we have VON (Victoria Order of Nurses), but I don't know what their duties are.

Dead right there Glasgowlass, it was thick like molasses and you could hardly get it oot the bottle. You also got tins of National Dried Milk, then they brought out Ostermilk and you bought that from the chemist. My mum made chocolate crispy cakes with the National Tried milk and I have never tasted anything like them since she died. All my pals used to fight over them to see who could eat the most. Wish I had paid attention to how she made them!!

Just noticed I put National Tried instead of Dried. Oops!! wub.gif

Here is a link to some information on "Green Ladies".

Green Ladies

The piece is interesting but not totally accurate, suggesting that these health visitors were phased out in 1946. I have a clear recollection of them being around at least until the mid-Fifties.
