Lyden Family History Options

I know you put this entry on a year ago, but I have started to research my family tree and came across your entry. I am a Lyden from Clydebank, the only Lyden's I know in Clydebank are my relatives, I would love to know what you found out.

I have also heard of the story that the name Lyden came from Holland, apparently there is a town called (or once called) Lyden in Holland.

I've done some family history. My Great, Great Grandparents came to Lanarkshire in 1841 from Sligo at the age of 21. There is a town in Holland called Leiden (pronounced Layden) and it has a University and is the place where the Artist Rembrandt was born. It's a lovely town and is only 30 mins by train from Amsterdam. I came across this site by chance but I'm happy to share other details of my search. william_layden@hotmail.com

My name is Claire Lyden and my family are also from Kilsyth, Scotland. I have just read Samantha Lyden's posting regarding her grandfather James Lyden. I think my grandfather John was your grandfather's brother, with Jane being the eldest sister.

As you probably know, John (who was married to Margaret) sadly died back in 2001. His son Alex is my father, with Philip his brother and Margaret his sister. They all live in Glasgow. I on the other hand have been living in England for the past 12 years near Tring in Herts.

Hope your side of the family are all well. As far as I know, your Grandfather James is well. Does he still play the keyboard/piano?

I am Jean Anne Lyden and I am from Clydebank. At St Andrew's High School there were Lyden's Jean and Helen but nobody thought we were related! My father William "Bill"passed away in May of last year and he did speak of having cousin's in Clydebank but I never met his cousins.

I was always told that the Lyden's came from Holland to Galway but I don't know when. The Lyden's that we are related to are still in Salthill Co.Galway. My father's father was John Lyden and he supposedly ran away from Galway to Scotland and slept in The Old Kilpatrick Hills - Don't know if that is true though. My dad was third born, one of four children and he married Mary McCafferty and had John and myself. His sister Annie the eldest child married Tom Gallagher and is also deceased. They had three children Thomas, John and Peter. Peter lives in Galway, Thomas in Glasgow and John has recently settled in Mullachmore Co Sligo.

James Lyden "Uncle Jimmy" married Glady's Lorimar and they had no children. Peter Lyden married May Gillon I think and they emigrated to Canada having two children Carol and Gary.
The Lyden grand family Granda John and his brother Tom both worked in John Browns and on The Queens so there must be connection to the other Lyden's.
I was always told that when the Lyden's came to Scotland, they couldn't spell and the name should have been spelt LEYDON but became LYDEN.

I'll ask my mother and cousins in Galway, Sligo and Glasgow what they now. Interestingly it was my 12 year old daughter who brought me to this page! I went to St Eunan's Primary followed by St Andrew's and I knew a Stephen Lyden from somewhere at The Top of The Hill but never thought of there being any relation.

I'm of the surname O'Loideáin and guess where I'm from? County Sligo Ireland.

The anglicised forms of the name vary and include Leyden, Leydon and Lydon, probably Layden and others too.

Leyden and Leydon are concentrated mainly in Sligo though also in Mayo
There are many with this name in Sligo that I know of, unrelated to myself

Lydon is mostly concentrated in Galway and Claire

That these names are all concentrated on the western coast of Ireland and all share the same gaelic root suggests that it is an Irish gaelic name in origin

Many gaelic names are derived from colours and Liath means grey
The name Liath comes from the Irish mythology of Fionn Mac Cumhail

There is also the Irish legend of LIADAN the poet

"I am Liadan
Who loved Kurithir,
It is true as they say.

"The music of the forest
Would sing to me when with Kurithir,
Together with the voice of the purple sea."

I have heard of the possible connection with a town in Holland called Leiden, but this seems unlikely given the geographical isolation of the name

Hello cousins,
I'm a leydon from Sligo, and have also heard about this Holland business and know of the town leiden, it is also possible to find the dutch name " van leiden". This name may be coincidental or remember alot of Irish fought and were exiled in Holland from at least a time of 1600. The name just happens to be similar to the town. I'm not sure where this idea came from about origins in Holland but i wouldn't dismiss it completely.
Anyway from my experience all variations derive from o'loideain, including liddane,lydon,leyden. It is definitely at home in the west of Ireland and still a name to be found on Islands and in the Gaelthact. So maybe some of you came from Holland, but i am sure as hell Irish. Its very unlikely for instance that anyone fighting for William of Orange would have settled far into rural Ireland deep in native lands, maybe they came before that. But i think you can pretty much rule that out fighting for the Williamites. I would say a slim chance of one of the variants deriving from a dutch name or of dutch origin with the town.
