Sumac, when you think about it, horses `apples' are whats left after the horse's digestive system has extracted what it requires from the, mostly, hay and grass on which the horse feeds. Granted there will be `pony pecils' in among that food intake and the odd bit of crusty bread or carrot but what what is ejected at the other end is, unlike doggie poo, very easily bio-degraded and/or scattered in the wind.
Great for gardens too; roses, vegetables etc.
The only time I saw poo-bags and shovels being used was with the rag-men used to come around blowin' their trumpets shouting D
