What do folk think of a statue in appreciation of the late Jimmy Reid?

and where would be the best place to site it?

I wish people would realise once and for all that Socialism is not about what people can do for you it's about what you can do for others as Jimmy Reid and his comrades demonstrated so well. Your right Tommy it saddens me so much that Blair and his ilk managed to make Socialism a dirty word somehow.

Latterly, Jimmy Reid referred to the Labour Party as the Thatcherite Labour Party, condemning elements within that party much in the same way he did in his losing speech at the 1974 election:

Note the condescending attitude of the commentator at the end.

Melody, Unfortunately those days seem to be long gone, now everyone is in “it “ for themselves or for what they can get for their pals, I doubt we will ever see the likes of this man again, or come to think if it the likes of our fathers & in my case my grandfather.

Well Lennox that is exactly what those in power want to hear from us all. Keep the faith remember your forefathers and all they fought for. It doesn't matter whether most heavy industries have gone the same principles apply. If we don't fight for the rights of others we can't expect them to fight for us. We should all pay respect to Jimmy Reid by abiding by the following same principles he and his comrades did. Watch the world change then if we did. smile.gif

Socialist Ten Commandments

Used in all the Socialist Sunday Schools, and committed to memory by the children.

1. Love your school companions, who will be your co-workers in life.
2. Love learning which is the food of the mind; be as grateful to your teachers as to your parents.
3. Make every day holy by good and useful deeds and kindly actions.
4. Honour good men and women; be courteous to all; bow down to none.
5. Do not hate or speak evil of any one; do not be revengeful, but stand up for your rights and resist oppression.
6. Do not be cowardly. Be a good friend to the weak, and love justice.
7. Remember that all good things of the earth are produced by labour. Whoever enjoys them without working for them is stealing the bread of the workers.
8. Observe and think in order to discover the truth. Do not believe what is contrary to reason, and never deceive yourself or others.
9. Do not think that they who love their own country must hate and despise other nations, or wish for war, which is a remnant of barbarism.
10. Look forward to the day when all men and women will be free citizens of one community, and live together as equals in peace and righteousness.

Take care pal. smile.gif

Yes melody you are 100% correct dae you wonder why i hate blair and the other scum that made up the so called new labour ,and have lambasted them at every turn since i came on glasgow guide they destroyed what was once a true party o the people not withoot ins flaws if were honest ,but as a whole the only party that looked efter the peoples interests first.

Then we had new labour jasus wis that clown blair maggies love child ,self interest and policy's that widda made maggie blush ,its my fervent hope that one day that monkey will stand trial fer war crimes..

In contrast we have Jimmy Reid a man that these new labour scum urnae fit tae polish his shoes ,I Jimmy no doubt like masel you held these scum in utter contempt and revulsion .

First time I've seen those Ten Commandments in print.
Pity that they're obviously not taught, or committed to memory, any more.

Whatever your politics - religion - ideals - principals (or lack of them smile.gif You've got to hand it to the man. Although 'commie' as the hammer and sicle - he showed people throughout the world, the 'wee man' CAN triumph over the prolitariate.

An erudite, and gracious man, was he - and yes - if I were nominating anyone for a memorial of some kind - not so 'wee' Jimmy from Govan, would be in my top ten, without a doubt. Though he may never have been one to doff his cap to anyone - I would have no hesitation in IMMEDIATELY recommending him for his beloved Scotland's highest civil award, his image being reproduced on Scottish banknotes. (Something Sir Edward Heath is unlikely to ever achieve).

Respect

wee davy

My husband worked in Fairfields, John Browns and was in Scotstoun Marine during the Work In.
He recognised quite a few faces in the video clip GG put in and said Tony Benn was in more than one March.

Jimmy Airlie is the tall guy next to Jimmy Reid and the wee guy is Sammy Barr, Boiler Makers Convener in Scotstoun who hubby said was a bit of a character.

He was also in that March as he was the Plumbers Shop Steward in Scotstoun Marine.

He had a lot of admiration for Jimmy Reid and his two associates.

RIP Jimmy.
