We did sing that, a whole choir of us, on many ocassions in school.
Mind you, I was brought up in Blantyre, the birthplace of Dr David Livingstone, so maybe we were against the mention of slaves; even if it was Britons never, never, neever beeing them laugh.gif

It was the Lord’s Prayer for us. It would be lovely to have started with a cheery song but school wasn’t a place to enjoy yourself!

my English friend told me the class stood and sang Land of hope and glory every morning before school started. how lovely,we started with a decade of the rosary, not quite as rousing.

I’ve just heard that, after an outcry, singing of Land of Hope etc and Rule Britannia is to be allowed at this years Proms. Yay!

Will they be singing:

Rule Britannia
Britannia rules the waves
Britons never neveer never
Shall be
To a mer-ma-id
At the bottom of thee deep blue sea

I remember we sang that politically correct version as schoolkids almost 70 years ago laugh.gif

Taurus, a woman after my own heart. I’m patriotic to the end but there are songs that are so inspiring they make me greet. LOHAG is definitely one of them. I envy the English for having such a full-on song, and I don’t envy them for anything else. I’ll be sat here, watching the Proms, singing my wee heart out, though I draw the line at waving the Union Jack or the Rainbow flag. I’ll maybe wave my Saltire instead, but I’ll be belting out LOHAG. 🏴 🏴 🏴 🎼 🎼 🎼
