Well that's another one under our belts!

Another sucessfull gathering of the Glasgow Highlanders with 46 attending a special mention to Jim Wilson who travelled up from England to attend - Jim was the only war time vet to be there and had some amazing and amusing stories to tell.

It was good to see so many "OLD" faces and looking forward to our next gathering which will be the Burns Supper (One not to miss) It will take place between the last two weeks in February and the first week in March 2008 again hopefully at Walcheren Barracks Maryhill Glasgow. We will be able to cater for about 80 so when the letter goes out get your returns in ASAP - Dates and details will be in the letter - if you want to do a bit on Burns let us know on your return - The events manager for this will be Hugh Cameron Ex WO2 - Signal Platoon - his details will be on the letter too.

Armistice Parade - 11 November - Those attending George Square it's about 10 am at John Street - behind the City Chambers at the Council tax offices - ready to march on about 10.40 look for the RHF people and Major Mack - after the parade - those one the actual parade are invited into the City Chambers - but remember you need a ticket to get into the chambers and these are limited - see Alister Mack on the day if he has any left - NO TICKET - NO ENTRY - The invite is for those on the actual parade if if you are an onlooker well done for attending and paying your respects but tickets ARE limited to those on parade - and even these are limited.

This will be the first time that 6 Scots will be kilted forming the Guard of Honour - Remember your Poppy

Next newsletter is starting to take shape but still looking for more of your input if not you'll have to suffer more of my stories!!

Hope Santa is good to you all and Best Wishes and good health to all of you and your families.

See you all at the Supper

I read your notice board with interest. My grandfather, Alexander Wood, enlisted in the GHs in early 1914, served in France and Flanders from November 1914 until November 1918, was wounded, as a sergeant, at High Wood in 1916, and was awarded the DCM in Ocotber 1918. He rose to be a CSM in the GHs between the wars. He re-enlisted in 1939 but served in WWII with the 12 (Garrison Batallion), HLI. My e-mail address is alexander.wood@blueyonder.co.uk .

Hi Alex

I tried to send you an EMail but it just bounced back each time

Thanks for your post on your Grandad - The association has been brought back after a few years absence and although the association has only a few actual ex Glasgow Highlanders in it - it was thought in this ever changing world of the military loosing some of it's indentity that we should try and keep the name going.

I don't know if you have looked at the Royal Highland Fusilier site but they have some war diaries of the 9th Glasgow Highlanders on pdf format and they are interesting reading you may even find something about your Grandad in them or at least what the battalion was involved in during his time with the battalion

go to www.rhf.org.uk

and click on the regimental banner and on the next page you will see some info on books on line and i think there are 3-4 books on the GH

There is also information on the GH association

Keep in touch

And Merry Xmas

Best Wishes

Dinger

Hi Ken

You served with E (HLI) Company in 73 well we must have crossed paths because I joined in March 72 and left the regiment in 2005 - names that you may remember will be the Company Commander Major Ron Smith - 2 IC Capt Fergie Woods the CSM at the time was Gibby McDowall and other names like Sgt John Cartwright - Sgt Davy Fraser - Sgt Davy Hill - Cpl Geordie Low - Ian Ross - Charlie Mooney to mention a few - and possibly me of course Dinger Bell - did you know that I host an E Coy reunion every November - the Saturday after Armistice Sunday - it's our Pie and Bean night and lots of old faces appear at this - How long did you serve as no doubt I do know you.

There is also a forum on the Royal Highland Fusilier web page for 52nd Lowland guys not many on it but you can join or just read into it - there is also a Glasgow Highlanders page - go to

www.rhf.org.uk

and click the banner and it opens up to allow you to go to the forum and the veterans page.

Well I hope you keep in contact and posibly see you at next years Pie and Bean night.

Look after yourself and enjoy the new year

Hi Celtchic

I knew Jimmy very well he was my Colour Sergeant when I first joined E (HLI) Company - sadly Jimmy passed away a few years ago as no doubt you know and I had the great privilage to have known him he was a legend at Hotspur Street I also had the honour of conducting the memorial service after his funeral at Walcheren Barracks.

Jimmy did 36 years with the Battalion and even today his name comes up in many discussions and was one of very few soldiers to receive the forth bar to his TA medal.

Jimmy had left the Battalion a very short time before he passed away and we as a Battalion were on exercise in England when he heard that he had passed away this came as a great shock. The commanding officer ordering a special church parade to inform the whole battalion and the RSM arranged for the burial party to leave the exercise to deal with his funeral service.

His last appointment with the Battalion was mess manager as Sergeant Major of the Officers Mess and he kept many a young officer from going off the tracks and many a time was seen taken young officers aside to have a quiet word in their ear.

As I went through the ranks Jimmy was always there on hand giving advice to myself as many others on the promotion ladder

A great guy - sadly missed -
