Anyone know when air raid sirens were last tested in Glasgow?
I seem to remember the big double-ended sirens on our school roof being tested in the mid-1950's. wacko.gif

Just slightly before my time, but I'm sure I remember a teacher tell me that they were ready for use during the Cuban missile crisis. Possibility?

I recall sometime in the early 60's the notice in the newspapers letting people know that the Sirens would be sounded on such and such a day at what ever time it was and it would be the last time they would be tested as there was no need for them anymore.

I heard that one whilst being tested blew up and showered debris evrywhere and this decided them to stop it completely.

Probably thought we would be safer just letting the enemy bomb us laugh.gif

But this is ringing a bell with me (no pun intended) i can recall hearing sirens going off around the mid sixties, although where i lived in Castlemilk there was a quarry a few miles away so that was probably a blasting warning.

Does anyone know if there were city wide air raid drills in the 60's?

I'm an old lady now but remember the sound of the sirens as vividly as if it was yesterday, and I can still see in my minds eye the searchlights lighting up the sky. I remember the terror I felt when my mother, with a baby in her arms, me by the hand and my brother clinging to her coat, raced for an air raid shelter. I did not really know why we were running but my mother's terror had passed into me and I remember the fear even today.

Certainly were tested in the 50s. They announced it beforehand but it still sent the willies up my mother and fathers generation.

It would have been round 53 or 4 when they stopped.
