Glasgow Boards/Forums _ General Chit Chat _ Sing Song

I've just hijacked this really, ell gave me the idea with his post on song lyrics. You know how sometimes I feel a song coming on, well I can just come in here and sing to myself without being a nuisance. If anyone else takes a notion they can come in and sing a wee song, is that ok? rolleyes.gif

A your adorable.

B your so beautiful.

C your a cutie full of charm.

D your delighful.

and I don't know the rest, I'll try to be sensible next time.

We could end up with a whole world of songs here you never know!

Posted by: ARCHIE MILLAR 3rd Aug 2003, 09:33pm

E--your exicitable

F--your a feather in my arms

G--you look good to me

H--your so heavenly

I --your the girl I adore

send the rest later

Gee but it's great after being out late walking my baby back home
Arm in Arm over meadow and farm
Walking my a baby back home
We go along harmonising a song or I'm reciting a poem
The hours go by and they give me the eye.......................

Great topic Melody. I can feel a song come over me right now and I just have to burst into feverish musical high pitch. It's awful though, when I'm in public and I start yelling my head off!
Cannae sing for tuppence, but whit can ah dae?
I love this particular song. Brings a wee tear to ma eye, so it does.

Maybe I didn't love you quite as good as I should have,
Maybe I didn't hold you quite as often as I could have,
Little things I should have said and done,
I just never took the time.

You were always on my mind,
You were always on my mind.

Maybe I didn't hold you all those lonely, lonely times,
And I guess I never told you, I'm so happy that you're mine,
If I made you feel second best,
I'm sorry, I was blind.

You were always on my mind,
You were always on my mind,

Oh Melody, whit hiv ye done ,I was searching on Winmx for this one ,My sister Annie ,used to sing it , she sang it at Barrowland,wi Billy McGregors band a ,Sarah Vaughan number

I'll take you dear ,anyway you are ,a sinner or saint,
Doesn't matter, what they say you are,I'll have no complaint.
whether it's foolish or wise dear,
I'll go along trustingly,
they say the devils in your eyes dear ,
but you look like an angel to me,
I won't ask you ,what the past has been ,
the dreams you have had,all the blessings,
I'll take with the sin,the good with the bad,
who cares what people say of you,
who cares what pictures they paint,
all I know is that I love you ,
saint or sinner, sinner or saint ,who cares!!!!

Melody I remember that one right through.
Need help on this wan!
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday,
I love you,
January February into March and April, same way too,
May June and July,
I`ll never let a day go by,
Without a kiss for you to remember?
Heres where I get stuck, i remember part of the rest?

A certain smile biggrin.gif a certain face
can lead an unsuspecting heart on a merry chase
A fleeting glance can say so many lovely things
Suddenly I know why my heart sings
Yuo love a while and then live knows
You try to hide the rears inside with a cheerful pose
But in the hush of night exactly like a bitter sweet refrain
Comes that certain smile to steal your heart away

Heart of my heart,
I love that melody,
Heart of my heart,
Brings home sweet memories,
When we were kids,
On the corner of the streets,
We were rough and ready guys,
But o how we could harmonise
Heart of my heart, When friends were dearer then,
We thought we'd never paaaaart, I know a tear could glisten
If once more I could listen,
To the gang who sang Heart of my Heart
Heart of my heaaaaart,
Whits the rest????

I love singing and music, it is an instant mood changer.
I'm away to think of another one.
Love you all XXX

It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy things
One of those bells that now and then rings
It was just one of those things
It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things
If we'd thought a bit of the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair was too hot not to cool down
So goodbye Dear and Amen and heres hoping that we meet now and then, it was great fun but it was just one of those things.......

Amazing how much we remember -

Little Things Mean A Lot

Blow me a kiss across the room
Say I look nice when I'm not
Touch my hair as you pass my chair
Little things mean a lot

Give me your arm as we cross the street
Call me at six on the dot
A line a day when you're far away
Little things mean a lot

Think there's something in between here

Send me the warmth of a secret smile
To show me you haven't forgot
For always and ever, now and forever
Little things mean a lot

Anybody know the rest?

Posted by: Melody 4th Aug 2003, 07:32pm

Posted by: betty2 4th Aug 2003, 07:34pm

Dont have to buy me diamonds & pearls champagne sables or such
I never cared much for diamonds or pearls
Cos honestly honey they just cost money
Give me your arm as i cross the way
Give me a shoulder to cry on
For always and ever
Thats now and forever
Little things mean a lot

The night is bitter
The stars have lost therr glitter
The winds grow colder
And suddenly you're older
An all because of the man that got away

No more his eager call
The writings on the wall
The dreams you dreamed have all gone astray

The man that won you
Has run aff an undone you
That great beginning
Has seen the final inning
I don't know what happened
It's all a crazy game
No more that all time thrill
Cos you've been through the mill
And never a new love will be the same

Good riddance goodbye, every trick of his your on to
but fools will be fools an wherrs he gaun tooooooo

The road gets rougher
It's lonlier and tougher
With hope you'll burn up
Tomorrow he may turn up
There is jist no let up to live long night an daaaaaayaayy
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than.....

A one man woman
Looking for the man that got away
The man thaaaat got awaaaaaaayyyyyyyy

can fill my heart with gladness, when i am near you

until the day we meet again No Sun No moon

Watch it flow right along where history was made by steam boat
M-e-m-p-h-i-s, Memphis is the town I mean
A way down yonder in the land of cotton
Folks like mine are near forgotten
What a wonderful thrill it is to be
Down in Memphis, Tennessee

Guy Mitchell:

Today I passed you on the street,
And my heart fell at your feet,
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you,
Somebody else stood by your side,
And he looked so satisfied,
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.

It's hard to know another's lips have kissed you,
And held you just the way I used to do,
Oh heaven only knows how much I missed you,
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.

A picture from the past came slowly stealing,
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you,
Then suddenly I got that old time feeling,
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you.

Or, how about ... (hope the words are right)

I'm the lonesomest gal in town
Everybody has thrown me down
I've got no angel child to ever call me dear
Got no honey man for me to cuddle near
Well I'm learnin' to roll ma eyes
And some day you may be surprised
When I steal someone's lovin' man
and kiss him with a smack
Ah'll hug him and ah'll squeeze him
But I'll never give him back
Cos I'm lonesome, so very lonesome
I'm the lonesomest gal in this here town

If you read in the paper some day
How some poor girl has passed away
Don't shed a tear if you should hear
That gal was me and if you see
My picture in the paper with a smile on my face
I was broken hearted that smile was out of place
If you want to save a girl from her grave
I need a man if you can ......

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
and dont be afraid of the dark
at the end of a storm there's a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of a lark
walk on through the wind
walk on through the rain
tho your dreams be tossed and thrown
walk on walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone

Kay Star singing the wheel of fortune, anyone know the words????

Snap your fingers, turn around about,
Shake your shoulders, go to town about,
Hi de ho down, lets get low down,
That's calling rythm???
Are these the right words????

As I was slowing passing,
An orphans home one day,
I stopped in for a moment,
Just to watch the children play,
Alone a boy was standing,
And when I asked hime why,
He turned with eyes, that could not see,
And he began to cry....
I'm nobody's child, I'm nooooobuuuudys child,
I'm like a floweeeer, just growing wild,
No Mummies kisses and no Daddy's smile,
Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child

God the memories of these songs

keep em coming

Wasn't it also Donald Peers that sang (1948):

There's a tree in the meadow,
With a stream drifting by,
And carved upon that tree I see,
"I love you till I die".

Then further on down Lovers' Lane,
A silhouette I see,
I know you're kissing someone else,
I wish that it was me.

I will always remember,
That look in your eye,
The day you carved upon that tree,
"I love you till I die".

Summer journeys to Niagra and to other places
Aggravate all our cares we'll save our fares
I've a cosy little flat in what is known as old Manhattan
We'll settle down right here in town
We'll have Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too
It's lovely going through the zoo
It's very fancy on old Delancey Street you know
The subway charms are so
When balmy breezes flow to and fro
And tell me what street compares with Mott street in July
Sweet pushcarts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wonderous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
Well turn Manhattan into a isle of joy

There could never be a portrait of my love,
For nobody could paint a dream,
You will never see a portrait of my love,
For miracles are never seen.

Anyone who sees her,
Soon forgets the Mona Lisa,
It would take I know,
A Michaelangelo,
And he would need the glow of dawn,
That lights the sky above,
To try to paint a portrait of my love.

And the encore tae that

Memories from the corner of my mind
misty watered coloured memories
of the way we were
scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
smiles we gave to one another of the way we were
biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
could it be that it was all so simple then
or has time rewritten every line
if we had the chance to do it all again
tell me would we could we
memories are so beautiful and yet
much too painful to remember
we simply choose to forget
but its the laughter we will remember
whenever we remember the way we were

Wanted
some one who kissed me,
and held me closely,
then stole my heart!
Wanted some one I trusted , who gave no warning
that we,d ever part
he was last seen
hanging out in some ones arms, she knew nothing of the danger in his charms
a jury, may find him guilty,
but I,d, forgive him if I could see
a signed confession that he,s repented ,and realy wanted no one but me !!

I found in my mothers eyes,
Those baby tales she told , that road all paved with gold
I found in my mothers eyes,
just like a wondering sparrow, one lonely soul,
I walked the straight & narrow, to reach my goal
gods gift far from above , a real unselfish love ,

If you're sweetheart sends a letter of goodbye
It's no secret, you'll feel better if you cry
When waking from a bad dream
Don't you sometimes think it's real
But it's only false emotions that you feel

If you're heartache seems to hang around too long
And you blue days keep getting bluer with each song
Remember sunshine can be found behind a cloudy sky
So let your hair down, and go right on baby and cry

Billy Eckstein sang a song and the lyrics are an impossibility?

Am I right or wrang?
Cause it says, she was the only one that could take his heart, before she got there, canny happen? huh.gif

Once I had a secret love that lived
within the heart of me but oh to soon
my secret love became impaitent to
be free.

So I told a friendly star the way that
dreamer,s often do just how wonderful
you are and why Im so in love with you

Then I shouted from the highest hill even
told a golden daffodil at last my hearts an
open book and my secret love is no secret
anymore.

Hi there everyone! Having a laugh reading all your posts. Singing away tae masel tae.
The following is Acker Bilk's song "Stranger on the Shore"

Here I stand, watching the tide go out
So all alone and blue
Just dreaming dreams of you

I watched your ship as it sailed out to sea
Taking all my dreams
And taking all of me

The sighing of the waves
The wailing of the wind
The tears in my eyes burn
Pleading, "My love, return"

Why, oh, why must I go on like this?
Shall I just be a lonely stranger on the shore?

The sighing of the waves
The wailing of the wind
The tears in my eyes burn
Pleading, "My love, return"

Why, oh, why must I go on like this?
Shall I just be a lonely stranger on the shore?

It looked Oriental to me. Maybe a Chinese take-away?!
In all seriousness, cough, cough. It could indeed be a UFO.
But we're supposed to be singin' here.

Ta rah ray a boom de ay
Out for a walk I went one day...

That's a nice wee song.

When we're in each other's arms
we know it isn't right.....

We are so in love,
but he loves you too.
How can I tell my best friend
that I'm in love with you?

Oh Kelly, please tell me..

Many a tear has to fall
but its all in the game
all in the wonderful game
that we know called love
you've had words with him
and your futures lookin dim
but these things you're heart can rise above
once in a while he wont call
but its all in the game
soon he'll be there by your side
with a sweet refrain
and he'll kiss your lips
caress your waiting fingertips
then your heart will fly again rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

I guess ye'll no sing along tae Guns n Roses, so ah'll be tolerant & put up wi' the songs o yesteryear. But it's the saccharine lyrics that get up mah nose - so here's a couple tae sing along to -

When I'm 61 [lyrics Roscoe Mathieu]

When I get older, losing my sight,
(zap!) Many years from now,
Will you still send me bullets in a heart design?
Hospital visits, bottle of wine?
If I've been out 'till quarter to three
Will you load your guns?
Will you still need me?
Will you still feed me?
When I'm Sixty-One?

And here's a variation o' the wan & only Janis Joplin's classic Mercedes Benz, lyrics by Liz Grenier.

Oh Lord won't you buy me a guy who has brains
Who's thoughtful and loving, or so he claims
He'll give me his coat whenever it rains
So lord won't you buy me a guy who has brains

Oh lord won't you buy me an un-macho guy
Someone who's sensitive and not afraid to cry
He'll put the lid down and never tell a lie
So oh lord won't you buy me an un-macho guy

Oh lord won't you buy a man with a car
Never forgets an anniversary, he's always up to par
You know that in life he will go far
Oh lord won't you buy me a man with a car

Oh lord if you create a guy who's all these things
Please send him down, does he have feathery wings
Give him my number, I'll wait until it rings
So oh lord make a guy who is all of these things

Posted by: Tumchie 6th Aug 2003, 01:31pm

I loved you in the morning
your kisses deep and warm,
your hair upon the pillow
like a sleepy golden storm.

Your eyes are soft with sorrow
hey that's no way to say
goodbye.

I'm not looking for another
as I wander throught my time.
Walk me to the corner
our steps will always rhyme.

You know my love goes with you
as your love stays with me,
it's just the way it changes
like the shoreline and the sea.

Your eyes are soft with sorrow
hey that's no way to say
goodbye.

Don't think twice - love Bob Dylan style.

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow
And it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don't know by now
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm traveling on
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
That light I never knowed
And it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe
I'm on the dark side of the road
Still I wish there was something you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin' anyway
Don't think twice, it's all right

It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
Like you never did before
It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal
I can't hear you any more
I'm a thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road
I once loved a woman, a child I'm told
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
Don't think twice, it's all right

I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe
Where I'm bound, I can't tell
But goodbye's too good a word, gal
So I'll just say, fare thee well
I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind
You could have done better but I don't mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
Don't think twice it's all right

my Poppa said son don't let the man get you do what he done to me
'cause he'll get you 'cause he'll get you now now.

I can remember the fourth of July runnin' through the backwood bare.
And I can still hear my old hound dog barkin' chasin' down a hoodoo there
chasin' down a hoodoo there.

Born on the bayou
born on the bayou
born on the bayou.

Wish I was back on the bayou rollin' with some Cajun Queen.
Wishin' I were a freight train, oh, just a-chooglin' on down to New Orleans.

Born on the bayou
born on the bayou
born on the bayou.

I've got you under my skin is my favorite Frank song!

Here is what they can play at my funeral...hahaha...so everyone will know how I love this toon, and the Muddy Charles that floats through it!

~lisaann tongue.gif

Dirty Water
THE STANDELLS
(Ed Cobb)

(spoken:)
I'm gonna tell you a story
I'm gonna tell you about my town
I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby
Aww, it's all about my town

Yeah, down by the river
Down by the banks of the river Charles (aw, that's what's happenin' baby)
That's where you'll find me
Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves (aw, but they're cool people)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, you're the Number One place)
Frustrated women (I mean they're frustrated)
Have to be in by twelve o'clock (oh, that's a shame)
But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh
That just once those doors weren't locked (I like to save time for
my baby to walk around)
Well I love that dirty water
Oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Because I love that dirty water
Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home (oh, yeah)

Well, I love that dirty water (I love it, baby)
I love that dirty water (I love Baw-stun)
I love that dirty water (Have you heard about the Strangler?)
I love that dirty water (I'm the man, I'm the man)
I love that dirty water (Owww!)
I love that dirty water (Come on, come on) [fade]

Here's anither knee slapper by Billie Joe Spears...

Sing me, sing me an old fashioned song
Bring me, back in my mind, to a time where my memories all come from
Ah good timing song, the kind that makes you want to sing along
A good old fashioned, hand clapping, knee slapping, foot tapping song

When I was young I used to wait
Upon my master and drain his pipe
And pass the bottle when his was dry
And wash away the boot tail fly

Jimmy crack corn ‘n I don’t care
Jimmy crack corn ‘n I don’t care
Jimmy crack corn ‘n I don’t caaaaaaaaare
The Master’s gone away

Shoo fly don’t bother me
Shoo fly don’t bother me
Shoo fly don’t bother me
I don’t want your company
Flies in the buttermilk two by two
Flies in the buttermilk shoo fly shoo
Flies in the butter milk skip tae ma loo
Skip tae ma loo my darlin

... yeeha!!

lisaann, I'd love to sample your cajun cooking, long as you didn't do a huge number on me with the scotch bonnet - hot's good but not searing.
My thanks to the Frankie Laine fans - people of taste & discernment!
He did the best version of this one -

All day I've faced a barren waste
Without the taste of water, cool water
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry
And souls that cry for water
Cool, clear, water

Keep a-movin, Dan, dontcha listen to him, Dan
He's a devil, not a man
He spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can ya see that big, green tree?
Where the water's runnin' free
And it's waitin' there for me and you?

The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water
Cool water
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
And carry on to water
Water, water, water

Keep a-movin, Dan, dontcha listen to him, Dan
He's a devil, not a man
He spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can ya see that big, green tree?
Where the water's runnin' free
And it's waitin' there for me and you?

Cool, clear, water
Cool, clear, water

Hi davy - Johnny Cash maybe?

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to Ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue"

Well, he must o' thought that is was quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,

My pal in Canada Eddie fae Motherwell, he wis a big blue eyes fan, did embdy sing (Night and Day your are the one, only you beneath the moon and under the stars?)
Frankie Laine wis his sister, Leeus Alane?
Once we lived in a shack drilled for oil, precious black gold?
Hey big al knows this guy?
The 6-5 special comin down the line,
the 6-5 special right on time,
Coal in the burner,
Burning up bright,
Rockin and a rollin,
Through the night,
For my hearts a beatin,
cause I`ll be greatin,
the 6-5 special,
At the station tonight.

Hear that whistle blowin 8 to the bar,
See that choo choo growin,
Cant be far,
Over the points over the points.

Sombdy jump in here, am knackered!

Posted by: thebardau 7th Aug 2003, 01:00am

Hangin mah heid in shame, Teeny - ah niver heard him do that yin. Ah kin do a great Jezebel when ah'm drunk. Ah'm upset tae think ah missed wan o Frankie's songs, ah'll never hear the end o this fae jimmyd - we think we both may hiv seen Frankie on the same night at the Empire. So ah'll droon mah sorrows wi a Bloody Mary the noo - & try tae make up wi a Sinatra song - ah love this wan, it's no sloppy.

And now, the end is near;
And so I face the final curtain.
My friend, I'll say it clear,
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain.

I've lived a life that's full.
I've traveled each and ev'ry highway;
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Regrets, I've had a few;
But then again, too few to mention.
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful step along the byway,
But more, much more than this,
I did it my way.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall;
And did it my way.

I've loved, I've laughed and cried.
I've had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
"No, oh no not me,
I did it my way".

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And did it my way!

cool.gif Hey Bard,
Did you know that great song was written by a Canadian - Paul Anka. And here's another little bit of info that I heard straight from the horse's mouth, Johnny Cash, (the man in black) his ancestors came from Fife. Sorry to interrupt, let the singing recommence rolleyes.gif

Oh the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And i was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind
In a lonely shack by a railroad track
I spent my younger days

ah need help fae the frankie laine club here sad.gif

Posted by: thebardau 7th Aug 2003, 01:27am

Thanks for that info, George Muir, I love to find out the background!
Paul Anka I remember - hell I musta hadda bitta romance in me once [keep it quiet!] cos I bought his "Diana" single & loved it -

I'm so young and you're so old
This, my da-a-rling, I've been told
I don't care just what they say
'Cause forever I will pray
You and I will be as fre-ee
As the birds up in the trees
Oh, ple-ee-ease sta-ay by me, Di-a-na!

Anutha Bloody Mary & I'll be singing Jezebel to my cats!

Posted by: thebardau 7th Aug 2003, 01:37am

I'm gutted - I don't remember Frankie Laine doing The Wayward Wind. Alzheimer's a mile in front now.
And the cats don't think much of the serenade of Jezebel - dry food today, Philistines. Hear it now, peeps!

If ever the devil was born without a pair of horns
It was you, Jezebel, it was you
If ever an angel fell, Jezebel, it was you
Jezebel, it was you

If ever a pair of eyes promised paradise
Deceiving me, grieving me, leavin' me blue
Jezebel, it was you

If ever the devil's plan was made to torment man
It was you, Jezebel, it was you

If ever a pair of eyes promised paradise
Deceiving me, grieving me, leavin' me blue
Jezebel, it was you

If ever the devil's plan was made to torment man
It was you, Jezebel, it was you, night and day, every way
Jezebel, Jezebel, Je-ze- be-e-e-ell !

There is a house in New Orleans

and its been the ruin of many a poor boy

my motherwas a tailor
she sewed my blue new blue jeans
my father was a gambling man
down in New Orleans

the only thing a gambler needs
is a suitcase and a trunk
and the only time he,s satisfied is when hes drunk
so mothers tell your children
not to do what I have done
spend your livesin sin and misery
in the house of the rising sun

well,Igot one foot on the platform
the other foot on the train
I,m going back to New Orleans
to wear a ball and chain

Posted by: Teeny 7th Aug 2003, 02:07am

thebardau, my father had an album of Frankie Laine's with that song on it and used to play it often, that's the only reason I remember it, it also had "Your Cheatin' Heart" on it.

My dad was a right music buff, he used to love Frank Skerrit's radio programme (me too) as he only played the golden oldies. If he heard anything he liked, but didn't already have he'd go to his favourite record shop near the barras and the if the guy didn't have what he was looking for he'd order it for him from America. That may well have been one of them.

When I'm there in a fortnight, I'll gladly ask him if he still has it in his collection and record it for you. If its too "scratchy" I'll take down the relevant details in case you may wish to buy it. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind having a copy myself!!

Cheers - Teeny tongue.gif

Posted by: thebardau 7th Aug 2003, 02:10am

And ye've got good taste, wee mags - even though Eric's a Pom! Talented painter too.

"Black" music in the US was only played on "black" radio stations, & US teenagers only heard "sanitised" versions of rhythm n blues. The Animals & the Rolling Stones changed all that & revived the careers of black musos.

Now I remeber why I got over romance - dumped & broken-hearted, I usedta play another Animals hit over & over again, sobbing in the dark -

If you ever change your mind
About leavin', leavin' me behind
Oh, oh, bring it to me
Bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me, oh yeah

You know I'll always be your slave
Till I'm dead and buried in my grave
Oh, oh, bring it to me
Bring your sweet lovin'
Bring it on home to me.

mags, ah've only heard some of Diana Krall's stuff, ah'm still deliberating which CD to get.
She IS good - & y'know how Julie London done the supremo "Cry me a river"? Well Diana Krall blows that one right oot the watter, no kidding.
Hell, ah'm learnin' stuff here - niver realised she's Canadian.
Ah'm blowin mah repyootayshun as a rock n roller here!

So here's another non-sloppy fave of mine - from Billy Joel -

I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm allright
I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home
I don't care what you say anymore this is my life
Go ahead with your own life leave me alone

I never said you had to offer me a second chance
I never said I was a victim of circumstance
I still belong
Don't get me wrong
And you can speak your mind
But not on my time

They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you can't sleep with somebody else
Ah but sooner or later you sleep in your own space
Either way it's O.K. you wake up with yourself

Posted by: thebardau 7th Aug 2003, 03:03am

Aw heck, whens mah hooswork gonna get done?

Ah gotta share this - good question hubert, hope ye enjoyed yer space trip!

Now I've had some sensations,
Away across the foam,
But the greatest feelin' of them all
is when you're sailin' home . . .

Sailin' up the Clyde,
Sailin' up the Clyde,
Back tae Bonnie Scotland,
Where the auld folks bide,
There's a lump comes in your throat,
And a tear you cannae hide,
When you're sailin' back tae Scotland,
And your ain fireside.

Try this one from Kevin Welch - great favourite of mine

I DON'T WANT NOBODY, (I'M) BETTER OFF ALONE
I'M SWORN TO INDEPENDENCE,
AND MY HEART IS MADE OF STONE
BUT YOU'RE BREAKING ON THROUGH,
SOMETHING ‘BOUT YOU
I'VE BEEN TAPPING MY TOES, TO THE WAY YOU TALK
I'VE BEEN SINGING ALONG
WHEN I WATCH THE WAY YOU WALK
HONEY I'VE GOT TO DO,
SOMETHING ‘BOUT YOU

I'VE GOT THIS LIFE OF MINE
IT'S NICE AND QUIET AND I LIKE IT FINE
I WORK REAL HARD, I'VE GOT NO TIME FOR YOU
BUT I'VE WHISKIED UP MY COFFEE CUP
I'M SITTING HERE TRYING NOT TO CALL YOU UP
AND IT'S GETTING TO WHERE I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO,
SOMETHING ‘BOUT YOU

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU LIKE THE DISTANT THUNDER
I CAN'T SAY I AIN'T BEEN WARNED
BUT THERE'S NO SHELTER TO CRAWL UNDER
THAT'S EVER GONNA SAVE ME FROM THIS STORM
SOMETHING ‘BOUT YOU, I CAN'T SHAKE
THERE'S SOMETHIN ABOUT YOU
THAT'S BEEN KEEPING ME AWAKE
THE WHOLE NIGHT THROUGH,
SOMETHING ‘BOUT YOU

Well, do I know how to get you all going? Or do I know how to get you all going? Absolutely fabulous singing but I can't get a word in now!! laugh.gif

They paved Paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got
Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And out them in a tree museum
And they charged all the people a dollar and a half just to see them
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Wonderful thread, melody!
Tennesse Wig-walk [sp?] is a novelty song I vaguely remember. "Little-girlie-voiced" singer - maybe Teresa Brewer though possibly earlier than her.
Lotsa novelty songs around the 50's were wildly popular one-hit wonders. Itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot bikini that betty2 was taking on holiday!
One-eyed one-horned flying purple-people-eater, & the marvellous "They're coming to take me away, ha ha he he.

Joni Mitchell was always great - there was a thread on GGBB1 on the Magdalen Laundries movie, & I got Joni's recording of that hard-hitting song then.

Sing on, melody, before the rush starts!

Posted by: lisaann 7th Aug 2003, 12:54pm

You might all laugh. but yous were all talking about Famous scottish stars in another thread...

When I was a wean, my very idol was Lena Zavaroni...God I was glued to the telly at my auntie Fran's all the time...what was that show...opportunity knocks? There was another variety show I thought with her on it, as well.

This is one that she copied, and I used tae sing into ma hairbrush! hahaha rolleyes.gif

Little Lilly was oh so silly and shy,
And all the fellows knew,
She wouldn't bill and coo,
Ev'ry single night some smart fellow would try
To cuddle up to her,
But she would cry;

Lilly was so good, everybody could tell
You'd never see her roam,
She'd always stay at home,
All the neighbors knew little Lilly too well,
For when the boys would call
They'd hear her yell;

Ma, he's making eyes at me
Ma, he's awful nice to me,
Ma, he's almost breaking my heart,
I'm beside him,
Mercy! Let his conscience guide him!
Ma, he wants to marry me,
Be by honey bee.
Every minute he gets bolder,
Now he's leaning on my shoulder,
Ma, he's kissing me!

Ma, he's making eyes at me
Ma, he's awful nice to me,
Ma, he's almost breaking my heart,
If you peek in, can't you see
I'm goin' to weakin'
Ma, he wants to marry me,
Be by honey bee.
Ma I'm meeting with resistance,
I shall holler for assistance,
"Ma", he's kissing me.

There's a garden, what a garden
Only happy faces bloom there
And there's never any room there
For a worry or a gloom there

Oh there's music and there's dancing
And a lot of sweet romancing
When they play the polka
They all get in the swing

Every time they hear that oom-pa-pa
Everybody feels so tra-la-la
They want to throw their cares away
They all go lah-de-ah-de-ay

Then they hear a rumble on the floor, the floor
It's the big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples form a ring
For miles around you'll hear them sing...

Roll out the barrel, we'll have a barrel of fun
Roll out the barrel, we've got the blues on the run
Zing boom tararrel, ring out a song of good cheer
Now's the time to roll the barrel, for the gang's all here

Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

Then they hear a rumble on the floor-or-or-or
It's the big surprise they're waiting for
And all the couples they form a ring
For miles around you'll hear them sing

Drree mopado theedo da-da-da-da

With many pages repeats can happen, hope not here? Anyhoo!
Bigal has a sentence in his song. My heart is made of stone.
I think Frankie Laine sang, The Rock of Gibraltar.
They call me the Rock of Gibraltar,
Thats why they say my heart is made of stone,
Please dont lead me to the alter,
Because Gibraltar is standing alone.

Burl Ives.
A little bitty tear let me down,
Spoiled my act as a clown,
I had it made up not to make a frown,
But a little bitty tear let me down.

Noo am no startin anything, Skirret and Lindsay, by the way where ur yeas, but I have heard Burl singing the Protestant Boy? huh.gif

Great reading all this, Melody! Smashing topic. You've got everyone singing away. Had forgotten about Burl Ives. Here's one by Dean Martin:

Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Let's fly way up to the clouds
Away from the maddening crowds
We can sing in the glow of a star that I know of
Where lovers enjoy peace of mind
Let us leave the confusion and all disillusion behind
Just like bird of a feather, a rainbow together we'll find

Volare, oh oh

Here's a song that all you Aussies can relate to, as the singer/songwriter is Eric Bogle, Australian/Scot from Peebles originally. I have attended a couple of his concerts here in Ontario, and he has a great following in Canada. I have only included the first verse and chorus as it is too long to reproduce here.

Well how d'ye do Private William McBride,
Do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside,
I'll rest for a while in the warm summer sun,
I've been walking all day Lord and I'm nearly done,
I see by your gravestone you were only19,
When you joined the war's fallen in 1916,
Well I hope you died quick and I hope you died clean,
Or Willie McBride was it slow and obscene?

Did they beat the drum slowly,
Did they sound the pipe lowly,
Did the rifles fire o'er ye,
As they lowered you down,
Did the bugle sing the Last Post and chorus,
Did the pipes play the "Floo'ers o' the Forest?

Posted by: thebardau 8th Aug 2003, 08:44am

I certainly empathise with that. All war is obscene. Thanks, George Muir. It brought to mind another Aussie song of the Vietnam War obscenity. Other Aussies here will know the tune to this, written by John Schumann & performed by Redgum.

I was only 19.

Mum and Dad and Denny saw the passing-out parade at Puckapunyal
It was a long march from cadets.
The sixth battalion was the next to tour, and it was me who drew the card.
We did Canungra, Shoalwater before we left.

And Townsville lined the footpaths as we marched down to the quay
This clipping from the paper shows us young and strong and clean.
And there's me in my slouch hat with my SLR and greens.
God help me, I was only nineteen.

From Vung Tau, riding Chinooks, to the dust at Nui Dat
I'd been in and out of choppers now for months.
But we made our tents a home, VB and pinups on the lockers
And an Asian orange sunset through the scrub.

And can you tell me, doctor, why I stil can't get to sleep?
And night-time's just a jungle dark and a barking M16?
And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only ninteen.

A four week operation when each step could mean your last one on two legs
It was a war within yourself.
But you wouldn't let your mates down til they had you dusted off
So you closed your eyes and thought about something else.

Then someone yelled "Contact!" and the bloke behind me swore
We hooked in there for hours, then a Godalmighty roar
Frankie kicked a mine the day that mankind kicked the moon,
God help me, he was going home in June.

I can still see Frankie, drinking tinnies in the Grand Hotel
On a thirty-six hour rec leave in Vung Tau
And I can still hear Frankie, lying screaming in the jungle
Till the morphine came and killed the bloody row.

And the Anzac legends didn't mention mud and blood and tears
And the stories that my father told me never seemed quite real.
I caught some pieces in my back that I didn't even feel
God help me, I was only nineteen.

And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And why the Channel Seven chopper chills me to my feet?
And what's this rash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means?
God help me, I was only nineteen.

Funny thing George and Bard,I have just downloaded those songs ,also Bogles The Band played waltzing Matilda.I get shivers down my spine with all three.
Amazing how many memories this thread brings up.

If you should see a big fat wummin,

If you should note she's wearing glasses,
talking to each one that passes,
give her all my love cause thats my MAMMY.

This... in Australia, every year, we have... we celebrate... we remember "ANZAC DAY" -- an' it's a very important day in Australia... the whole day is given over to remembering the soldiers who died in... all the wars and... the whole day -- in Britain, in England, they have two minutes of silence once a year.
It's important in Australia, because at Gallipoli, in 1915, for the first time, the Australian soldiers had Australian officers -- before then, the Australian army had British officers.

And... by this time, it was an all-Australian army, and they did quite well... and Australia was very proud of 'em. And they engendered a great sense of national pride, back home in Australia.

The saying arose that Australia became a nation founded on the blood of our soldiers who died at Gallipoli. So... it was very important to Australia.

We have... in Britain just now.. and THEN it was "our brave boys at Gallipoli"... in Britain, just before John [Munro] and I left three days ago, it was "our brave boys in the Falkland Islands." The jingoism always remains the same... it's just the wars that are different... but they seem stupid, hackneyed phrases... which demeans the soldiers...

Right... I'll get off my pulpit... stop preaching and sing a song...
I get quite heated about this subject...

Now when I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover.
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback,
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over.
Then in 1915, my country said, "Son,
It's time you stop ramblin', there's work to be done."
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun,
And they marched me away to the war.

And the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As the ship pulled away from the quay,
And amidst all the cheers, the flag waving, and tears,
We sailed off for Gallipoli.
And how well I remember that terrible day,
How our blood stained the sand and the water;
And of how in that hell that they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter.
Johnny Turk, he was waitin', he primed himself well;
He showered us with bullets, and he rained us with shell --
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell,
Nearly blew us right back to Australia.
But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
When we stopped to bury our slain,
Well, we buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs,
Then we started all over again.
And those that were left, well, we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire.
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher.
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head,
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well, I wished I was dead --
Never knew there was worse things than dying.
For I'll go no more "Waltzing Matilda,"
All around the green bush far and free --
To hump tents and pegs, a man needs both legs,
No more "Waltzing Matilda" for me.
So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed,
And they shipped us back home to Australia.
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane,
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla.
And as our ship sailed into Circular Quay,
I looked at the place where me legs used to be,
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me,
To grieve, to mourn and to pity.
But the band played "Waltzing Matilda,"
As they carried us down the gangway,
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared,
Then they turned all their faces away.
And so now every April, I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reviving old dreams of past glory,
And the old men march slowly, all bones stiff and sore,
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask meself the same question.
But the band plays "Waltzing Matilda,"
And the old men still answer the call,
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday, no one will march there at all.
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda.
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?

Hi Hubert

Jist hid a wee check fur ye pal. The post you're referring to that you can't find I think is on page 7 and you posted it at 6.59am. I've copied below some of the text from there:

"Gibraltar Frankie Laine, My heart is made of stone?
Burl Ives A little bitty tear let me down, also the Protestant Boy, reminds me, where is Skirret and Lindsay."

Have another look now and you'll probably be able to find it.

Och ye've made me discontented, wee mags, ah'm gonnae havta get pay TV cos free-to-air TV seems to put the classic movies on in the wee sma' hours. Ah loved Gene Kelly especially, oh an the strict harmonies & zaniness of the Andrew Sisters, they were smashin'. Mah fave A.sisters is Rum and Coca-aa-Cola -

If you ever go down Trinidad
They make you feel so very glad
Calypso sing and make up rhyme
Guarantee you one real good fine time

Drinkin' rum and Coca-aa-Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dolla-a-ah

Since the Yankee come to Trinidad
They got the young girls all goin' mad
Young girls say they treat 'em nice
Make Trinidad like paradise

Drinkin' rum and Coca-aa--Cola
Go down Point Koomahnah
Both mother and daughter
Workin' for the Yankee dolla-aa-aah!

There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some are gone and some remain
Oh these places had their meanings
With lovers and friends, I still recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one, compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love, as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I've loved you more

Sorry Ed. a wee romantic one! smile.gif

You're a hopeless romantic - but you sing so sweetly!
Here's the first rock n roll song I ever heard. Although under age & still at school, I often worked in a relative's cafe in Partick. I was carrying a tray of sundaes & drinks when these strains belted out from the jukebox - I knew in that moment that the world I knew had changed forever & I promptly dropped the tray. This is the ORIGINAL Big Joe Turner version -

Shake Rattle & Roll.

Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Get outta that bed, wash your face and hands
Well, you get in that kitchen, make some noise with the pots 'n pans

Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through
Way you wear those dresses, the sun comes shinin' through
I can't believe my eyes, all that mess belongs to you

I believe to the soul you're the devil and now I know
I believe to the soul you're the devil and now I know
Well, the more I work, the faster my money goes

I said shake, rattle and roll, Shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, Shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soull

I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
I'm like a one-eyed cat peepin' in a seafood store
Well I can look at you till you ain't no child no more

Ah, shake, rattle and roll, Shake, rattle and roll
Shake, rattle and roll, Shake, rattle and roll
Well, you won't do right to save your doggone soul

Posted by: thebardau 9th Aug 2003, 11:45am

No, I hadn't seen jiving at that stage, all I did was drop both the tray & my jaw! Had a similar reaction on hearing "Heartbreak Hotel" on the family radio in Tasmania - I literally dropped to my knees when I first heard the young Elvis. Yes, I did jive, was one of a group of kids whose pic appreard in a local paper, all of us jiving outside a cinema where "Rock around the Clock" was showing, we'd all wagged school several times to see the movie & I came so close to being expelled.

Posted by: Melody 9th Aug 2003, 11:50am

And I'm the romantic one indeed. ohmy.gif I never dogged school to go to the dancin' !! laugh.gif
You'll like this one Ed.

Close your eyes, close the door,

You don't have to worry any more.

I'll be your baby tonight.

Shut the light, shut the shade,
You don't have to be afraid.
I'll be your baby tonight.

Well, that mockingbird's gonna sail away,

We're gonna forget it.

That big, fat moon is gonna shine like a spoon,

But we're gonna let it,
You won't regret it.
Kick your shoes off, do not fear,
Bring that bottle over here.
I'll be your baby tonight.

Cracklin’ Rosie

Oh, Cracklin' Rosie, get on board. We're gonna ride till there ain't no more to go,
taking it slow and Lord, don't you know, have me a time with a poor man's lady.
Hitching on a twilight train, ain't nothing there that I care to take along,
maybe a song to sing when I want. Don't need to say please to no man for a happy tune.

Oh, I love my Rosie child, she got the way to make me happy. You and me, we go in style.
Cracklin' Rosie you're a store-bought woman, you make me sing like a guitar humming,
So hang on to me, girl, our song keeps running on.
Play it now, play it now, play it now, my baby.

Cracklin' Rosie, make me a smile, girl, if it lasts for an hour, that's all right,
we got all night to set the world right. Find us a dream that don't asks no questions, yeah.

Oh, I love my Rosie child, she got the way to make me happy. You and me, we go in style.
Cracklin' Rosie you're a store-bought woman, you make me sing like a guitar humming,

September Morn For Catherine.

Stay for just a while, stay, and let me look at you.
It's been so long, I hardly knew you, standing in the door.
Stay with me a while, I only wanna talk to you.
We've traveled halfway 'round the world to find ourselves again.
September morn, we danced until the night became a brand new day,
two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play.
September morning still can make me feel that way.

Look at what you've done. Why, you've become a grown-up girl.
I still can hear you crying in the corner of your room.
And look how far we've come, so far from where we used to be.
But not so far that we've forgotten how it was before.
September morn, do you remember how we danced that night away?
Two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play.
September morning still can make me feel that way.

September morn, we danced until the night became a brand new day,
two lovers playing scenes from some romantic play.
September morning still can make me feel that way.
September morning still can make me feel that way.

Hello Again (Diamond/Lindgren)

Hello again, hello. Just called to say 'hello.'
I couldn't sleep at all tonight and I know it's late, but I couldn't wait.
Hello, my friend, hello. Just called to let you know
I think about you every night when I'm here alone and you're there at home, hello.

Maybe it's been crazy and maybe I'm to blame, but I put my heart above my head.
We've been through it all and you loved me just the same.
And when you're not there, I just need to hear-

hello, my friend, hello. It's good to need you so.
It's good to love you like I do and to feel this way when I hear you say, hello.

Hello, my friend, hello. Just called to let you know
I think about you every night and I know it's late, but I couldn't wait, hello.

Promise this is the last. I'm greetin' noo sad.gif

Rhythm Of My Heart (Jordan/Capek)

Across the street, the river runs. Down in the gutter, life is slipping away.
Let me still exist in another place, running under cover of a helicopter blade.
The flames are getting higher in effigy, burning down the bridges of my memory.
Love may still be alive somewhere, someway,
where they're downing only deer a hundred steel towns away.
Oh, the rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum
with the words "I love you" rolling off my tongue.
No, never will I roam for I know my place is home.
Where the ocean meets the sky, I'll be sailing.

Photographs and kerosene light up my darkness light it up, light it up.
I can still feel the touch of your thin blue jeans.
Running down the alley, I've got my eyes all over you baby, oh, baby.
Oh, the rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum
with the words "I love you" rolling off my tongue.
No, never will I roam for I know my place is home.
Where the ocean meets the sky, I'll be sailing. I'll be sailing.

Oh, I've got lightning in my veins shifting like the handle of a slot machine.
Love may still exist in another place,
I'm just yanking back the handle no expression on my face.
Oh, the rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum
with the words "I love you" rolling off my tongue.
No, never will I roam for I know my place is home.
Where the ocean meets the sky, I'll be sailing.

Oh, the rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum
with the words "I love you" rolling off my tongue.
No, never will I roam for I know my place is home.
Where the ocean meets the sky, I'll be sailing.

Ah held mah peace tae Zippi-dee-doo-dah.
Karaoke's really popular here wi' the Chinese - & we a' laugh at them.
But even they widna gie Disney stuff the time o' day. Supercalli & a'.
See whit this has caused? A rousin' toe-tapper tae the tune o Johnny comes marchin' home again -

He jumped without his parachute from 50,00 feet,
[repeat 2 more times]
And he ain’t gonna jump no mo-o-ore.

They scraped him off the tarmac like a pound of strawberry jam
Etc
And he ain’t gonna jump no mo-o-ore.

They packed him in a kitbag & they sent him home to Mum
etc
And he ain’t gonna jump no mo-o-ore.

And ah CAN be romantic - so there!

Brand New Key - from Melanie

I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller-skated to your door at daylight
It almost seems like you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out you see

I been looking around awhile
You got something for me
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

I ride my bike, I roller skate don't drive no car
Don't go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don't drive
I been all around the world
Some people say, I done all right for a girl

I asked your mother if you were at home
She said yes but you weren't alone
Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me
I'm okay alone, but you got something I need

Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key
I think that we should get together and try them out to see
La la la la la la la la, la la la la la la
Oh! I got a brand new pair of roller skates
You got a brand new key

Och, ye see right through me, melody! Like wi' "I'll be your baby, tonight" - a heart-melter. Well, the lassies seem tae like the romance, so here's the ultimate love song, Dire Straits, & no' a soppy word in it.

Romeo and Juliet
A lovestruck romeo sings a streetsuss serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
Finds a convenient street light, steps out of the shade,
Says something like - you and me babe, how about it?

Juliet says hey it's romeo - you nearly gimme a heart attack
He's underneath the window, she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you gonna do about it?

Juliet the dice was loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded into my heart
And I forget the movie song
When you gonna realise it was just that the time was wrong- julie-e-e-t?

Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame
Both dirty, both mean, yes and the dream was just the same
And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me as if I was just another one of your deals?

When you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything, you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say oh romeo, yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
I can't do anything ‘cept be in love you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
And all I do is keep the beat and bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme
Julie I'd do the stars with you any time

A lovestruck romeo sings a streetsuss serenade
Laying everybody low with a lovesong that he made
finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

I needed the shelter of someone's arms
An therr ye werr
I needed someone to understand my ups an downs
Therr ye werr
With sweet love an devotion
Deeply touchin ma emotion
I wanna stop an thank you baby, ah wanna stop..an thank ye baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you
Like honey to the bee baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you....

I close ma eyes at night
Wonderin wherr I'd be without ye in ma life
Everythin wis jist a bore
All the things I did, seemed I'd done them afore
but you brighten up for me all ma days
With a love so sweet in so many ways
I wanna thank ye baby
I jist wanna thank ye baby

How sweet it is to be loved by you
Like sugar to ma soul baby
How sweet it is to be loved by you
You werr better to me than ah was to maself
For me therrs you and aint nobody else
I wanna stop an thank you baby
Ah jist wanna stop...an thank you baby

THE best drunk song!

DEAR ONE.

When the mailman came to our house this mornin'
I was waitin' right there for him at the door
But when I opened up and read your last letter
Then I knew that I would wait for him no more

'cause you said' Dear One, there's somethin' that I have to tell you"
"Dear One, there's somethin' that I have to say, yay-yay"
"Dear One, he's tall, dark, well you know how it is"
"And Dear One, he stole my heart away."

"Ah please don't cry, (please don't cry ) try not to be sad (try not to be sad)"
"I tried and I tried (I tried and I tried) not to hurt you bad (not to hurt you bad)"
"I tried so hard (I tried so hard) not to give in (not to give in)"
"But I lost my head and I lost my heart and I lost your love to him"

Repeat chorus ad infinitum/until you fall don, whichever~

Noo Ed this a happy one, not sloppy..

Brown Eyed Girl

Hey where did we go, days when the rains came? Down in the hollow, playing a new game.
Laughing and a running hey, hey, skipping and a jumping
in the misty morning fog with our hearts a thumping and you, my brown eyed girl.
You, my brown eyed girl.

Whatever happened to Tuesday and so slow? Going down the old mind with a transistor radio.
Standing in the sunlight laughing, hiding behind a rainbow's wall,
slipping and sliding all along the water fall, with you, my brown eyed girl.
You, my brown eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing, sha la la…

So hard to find my way now that I'm all on my own.
I saw you just the other day, my, how you have grown.
Cast my memory back there, Lord sometime I'm overcome thinking 'bout
making love in the green grass behind the stadium with you, my brown eyed girl.
You, my brown eyed girl.

Do you remember when we used to sing, sha la la…

Do you like this Ed.?

Simple Twist Of Fate

They sat together in the park as the evening sky grew dark.
She looked at him and he felt a spark tingle to his bones,
it was then he felt alone and wished that he'd gone straight
and watched out for a simple twist of fate.

They walked alone by the old canal, a little confused, I remember well,
and stopped into a strange hotel with a neon burning bright,
he felt the heat of the night hit him like a freight train moving with a simple twist of fate.

A saxophone someplace far off played as she was walking on by the arcade,
as the light bust through a beat-up shade where he was waking up,
she dropped a coin into the cup of a blind man at the gate
and forgot about a simple twist of fate.

He woke up the room was bare, he didn't see her anywhere.
He told himself he didn't care pushed the window open wide,
felt an emptiness inside to which he just could not relate
brought on by a simple twist of fate.

He hears the ticking of the clocks and walks along with a parrot that talks,
hunts her down by the waterfront docks where the sailors all come in,
maybe she'll pick him out again. How long must he wait?
One more time for a simple twist of fate.

People tell me it's a sin to know and feel too much within.
I still believe she was my twin but I lost the ring.
She was born in spring but I was born too late, blame it on a simple twist of fate.

Bobby boy.

It's right here Ed. will you teach me to jive as well? Can you jive to Dylan?
Ach I'm sure we'll manage, I'm sure I've done it before. laugh.gif
What about poor Joan Baez, and dig up a good Dr John one, we're rockin' kid! laugh.gif

Posted by: thebardau 10th Aug 2003, 04:20pm

Like your style - here's one of Bob's for a smooth jive, Absolutely Sweet Marie

Well, your railroad gate, you know I just can't jump it
Sometimes it gets so hard, you see
I'm just sitting here beating on my trumpet
With all these promises you left for me
But where are you tonight, my sweet Marie?

Well, I waited for you when I was half sick
Yes, I waited for you when you hated me
Well, I waited for you inside of the frozen traffic
When you knew I had some other place to be
Now, where are you tonight, my sweet Marie?

Well, anybody can be just like me, obviously
But then, now again, not too many can be like you, fortunately.

Well, six white horses that you did promise
Were fin'lly delivered down to the penitentiary
But to live outside the law, you must be honest
I know you always say that you agree
But where are you tonight, my sweet Marie?

Forward, back, forward, back, side, side - if you can count to 2, you can jive, honest, ah'm past the jumps & acrobatics!

Dr John's one of the few people Van calls friend. And here's one you'll know.

I been in the right place
But it must have been the wrong time
I’d of said the right thing
But I must have used the wrong line
I been in the right trip
But I must have used the wrong car
My head was in a bad place
And I’m wondering what it’s good for

I been the right place
But it must have been the wrong time
My head was in a place
But I’m having such a good time
I been running trying to get hung up in my mind
Got to give myself a little talking to this time

Posted by: Melody 10th Aug 2003, 04:34pm

Ed. is that 'Such a Night' by Dr John?

Oh what a night it was it really was such a night?

Love him to death. Remember the band, do you know 'Jokerman'?

'Jokerman lives by the nightingale's tune
Birds fly high by the light of the moon Jokerman'

Can't remember the words.

We could have agreat party Ed. laugh.gif

Posted by: wee mags 10th Aug 2003, 04:36pm

blame it on my roots
I showed up in boots
and ruined your black tie affair
the last one to know
the last one to show
I was the last one you
thought you would see there
and I saw the surprise
and the fear in his eyes
when I took his champagne and toasted you
said ,honey we may be through
but youll never hear me complain

cause I got friends in low places
where the whiskey drowns
and beerchases ma blues away
and I,ll be okay
I,m not big on social graces
think I,ll slip on down to the oasis
Oh,Ive got friends in low places

That Dr John was "Right Place Wrong Time". His "Anutha Zone" is a great album, has Sweet Home New Orleans & Hello God on it too. Wanna jive some more? This'll get the karaoke rockin'!

Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
help me find the party tryin´ to get in touch with me.
She could not leave her number but I know who placed the call
my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall.

Aaah, help me information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who would phone me here from Memphis Tennessee.
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
just a half a mile from the Missisippi bridge.

Aaah, help me information more than that I can not add
only that I miss her and all the fun we had,
but we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
and tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee.

Last time I saw Marie she was waving me goodbye
with hurry-home-drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye
Marie is only 6 years old so information please
try to put me through to her in Memphis Tennessee.

You know, the landlord he rang my front door bell.
I let it ring for a long, long spell.
I went to the window,
I peeped through the blind,
And asked him to tell me what was o-o-on on his mind.
He said,

Money, honey.
Money, honey.
Money, honey, if you want to get alo-o-o-ng with me.

Well, I screamed and I hollered,
I was so hard-pressed.
I called the woman that I loved the best.
I finally got my baby about half past three,
She said I'd like to know what you want with me.
I said,

Money, honey.
Money, honey.
Money, honey,
If you want to get along with me.

Well, I've learned my lesson and now I know
The sun may shine and the winds may blow.
The women may come and the women may go,
But before I say I love you so,
I want

Money, honey.
Money, honey.
Money, honey,
If you want to get alo-o-o-ng with me.

Here's a country rocker fur wee mags, everybody likes Steve Earle, man wi' a political conscience he is - & jist ignore the moonshine bit, it's a part of US history!

Copperhead Road.

Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road

Cigarees, & whisky and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane;
Cigarees, & whisky and wild wild women
They'll drive you crazy, they'll drive you insane;

Once I was happy and had a good wife
I had enough money to last me for life
Then I met with a gal and we went on a spree
She taught me smokin' and drinkin' whiskee
(CHORUS) – cigarees & whisky etc

And now good people, I'm broken with faith
The lines on my face make a well written page
I'm weavin' this story -- how sadly but true
On women and whisky and what they can do
[CHORUS]

Tae keep the party goin', this was the first thing ah ever saw on TV - in a shop window it wuz, Buddy Holly & The Crickets.

Well that'll be the day
when you say goodbye.
Yeah that'll be the day
when you make me cry.
You say you're gonna leave,
you know it's a lie
'cos that'll be the day
when I die.

Well you gave me all your loving
and all your turtle doving,
all your hugs and kisses
and your money too.
You say you love me baby,
still you tell me maybe
that somebody, well I'll be through.

CHORUS - Well that'll be the day

Well when Cupid shot his dart,
he shot it at your heart.
So if we'll ever part,
and I'll leave you.
You say and hold me,
and you tell me boldly
that some day, well I'll be through.

Hope ye huvnae finished up the Moet! A wee bit ower here would go down a treat.

Bonanza
We chased lady luck, 'til we finally struck Bonanza.
With a gun and a rope and a hat full of hope, planted a family tree. We got hold of a pot of gold, Bonanza.
With a horse and a saddle, and a range full of cattle, how rich can a fellow be?

On this land we put our brand, Cartwright is the name, fortune smiled, the day we filed the Ponderosa claim.
Here in the West, we're livin' the best, Bonanza, if anyone fights any one of us, he's go a fight with me, Bonanza.

Hoss and Joe and Adam know every rock and pine, no one works, fights, or eats, like those boys of mine. Here we stand in the middle of a grand Bonanza.
With a gun and a rope and a hatful of hope, we planted our family tree, we got hold of a potful of gold, Bonanza.

With a houseful of friends where the rainbow ends, how rich can a fellow be?
On this land we put our brand, Cartwright is the name, fortune smiled, the day we filed the Ponderosa claim. Here in the west we're livin' the best Bonanza.

With the friendliest, fightingist, loving band, that ever set foot in the promised land, and we're happier than them all.
That's why we call it Bonanza...Bonanza...Bonanza...

A dress of calico for a pretty Navajo
Get along, mule! get along

Mule train!! (Hyah, hyah)

When there's no one complaining there'll be days like this
When everything falls into place like the flick of a switch
Well my mama told me there'll be days like this

When you don't need to worry there'll be days like this
When no one's in a hurry there'll be days like this
When you don't get betrayed by that old Judas kiss
Oh my mama told me there'll be days like this

When you don't need an answer there'll be days like this
When you don't meet a chancer there'll be days like this
When all the parts of the puzzle start to look like they f it
Then I must remember there'll be days like this

When everyone is up front and they're not playing tricks
When you don't have no freeloaders out to get their kicks
When it's nobody's business the way that you wanna live
I just have to remember there'll be days like this

When no one steps on my dreams there'll be days like this
When people understand what I mean there'll be days like this
When you ring out the changes of how everything is
Well my mama told me there'll be days like this

Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
I don't know what train he's on
Won't you tell me where he's gone

Don't know where he's headin for
What he's done against the law
Got no future, got no hope
Just nothin but the rope

Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
I don't know what train he's on
Won't you tell me where he's gone

He lost his reason, lost his life
He killed his friend in mortal strife
He must have moved like the golden skies
Just a-waitin til he dies

Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
I don't know what train he's on
Won't you tell me where he's gone

When he dies, just bury him please
Way down the end of old Chestnut Street
Poplars at his head and feet
And tell them he's gone to sleep

Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
Freight train, freight train, goin so fast
I don't know what train he's on
Won't you tell me where he's gone

I just got in frae the Isle of Skye
I'm not very big and I'm awfully shy
The ladies shout as I go by
"Donald where's your trousers?"

Chorus
Let the winds blow high,
Let the winds blow low,
Down the street in m' kilt I go
And all the ladies say "Hello
Donald where's your trousers?"

JD Nancy reminded me of a Furey's song which was written by Eric Bogle.. which he wrote in dedication to his Mother when he was leaving Glasgow for Australia !

In comes the train and the whole platform shakes
It comes to a stop and the screaming of breaks
The parting has come and my grieving so late
I'm leaving my Nancy Oh!

You stand there so calmly and determindly gay
You talk of the weather and events of the day
But your eyes tell me all that your tongue doesn't say
Goodbye My Nancy Oh !

So come a little closer, put your head upon my shoulder
And let me hold you one more time
Before the whistle blows

Posted by: leeninaus 11th Aug 2003, 04:33pm

I meant to add above ... that every time I hear this song it brings back memories of my dear Mother & Mother-in-law when we had finally decided to settle down & make our home in Australia ..I will never forget their faces when we were leaving !

3 lovely ones there - plus Andy Stewart whom I haven't heard for ages. We seem to be in quieter mood, or maybe folks are warming up. I heard a chorus of this one today -

He's got the whole world in his hands,
He's got the whole world in his hands,
He's got the whole wide world in his hands - he's got the whole world in his hands.

It was sung by Laurie London, but I seem to remember a young English lass with a great big voice singing this, can't think of her name.

laugh.gif This one's for you, Thebardau!!

The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction
A real big spender
Good lookin' so refined
Say, wouldn't you like to know what's goin' on in my mind?
So let me get right to the point
I don't pop my cork for every guy i see
hey big spender,
spend a little time with me
Wouldn't you like to have fun, fun, fun
(fun, fun, fun, fun)
How's about a few laughs, laughs, laughs
(laughs, laughs, laughs, laughs)
I could show you a good time
Let me show you a good time!
So let me get right to the point,
I don't pop my cork for every guy i see
hey big spender, hey big spender, hey big spender
spend, a little time with me
spend a little time with me.

You're in fine voice there, Tumchie! I saw Shirley Bassey do this in a nightclub many years ago, she sashayed round the front tables & the place went mad. How good's your memory - real oldie now -

Midnight, one more night without sleepin'
Watchin' till the mornin' comes creepin'
Green door, what's that secret you're keepin?

There's an old piano
And they play it hot behind the green door
Don't know what they're doin'
But they laugh a lot behind the green door
Wish they'd let me in
So I could find out what's behind the green door

Knocked once, tried to tell them I'd been there
Door slammed, hospitality's thin there
Wonder just what's goin' on in there

Saw an eyeball peepin'
Through a smoky cloud behind the green door
When I said "Joe sent me"
Someone laughed out loud behind the green door
All I want to do is join the happy crowd behind the green door

Midnight, one more night without sleepin'
Watchin' till the mornin' comes creepin'
Green door, what's that secret you're keepin?

Ah don't think ah remember that song. Must be way before ma time! tongue.gif

This next one is also an oldie - Gershwin composed it I do believe. But later, Rod Stewart also sang it.

The way you wear your hat
The way you sip your tea
The memory of all that
No, no, they can't take that away from me

The way your smile just beams
The way you sing off key
The way you haunt my dreams
No, no, they can't take that away from me

We may never, never meet again, on that bumpy road to love
Still I'll always, always keep the memory of

The way you hold your knife
The way we dance till three
The way you change my life
No, no they can't take that away from me
No, they can't take that away from me

there are places i'll remember
all my life..though some have changed
some forever.. not for better
some have gone and some remain
all these places have their moments
with lovers and friends i still can recall
some are dead and some are living
in my life..i've loved them all

but of all these friends and lovers
there is no one compares with you
and these memories lose their meaning
when i think of love as something new
though i know i'll never lose affection
for people and things that went before
i know i'll often stop and think about them
in my life..i love you more..

Ah memories, wee mags. Remember the lovely Dusty Springfield - what a lady. I think everyone can sing along to -

I don't want your lonely mansion
With a tear in every rooom
All I want's the love you promised
Beneath the halo'd moon
But you think I should be happy
With your money and your name
And hide myself in sorrow
While you play your cheating game

Silver thread and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine
And I dare not drown my sorrows
In the warm glow of your wine
You can't buy my love with money
For I never was that kind
Silver thread and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.

Come to me my melancholy baby
Cuddle up and don't be blue
All your tears are foolish fancies maybe
You know dear that I'm in love with you
Every cloud must have a silver lining
Wait until the sun shines through
Smile my honey dear
While I kiss away each tear
Or else I shall be melancholy too

Wan o' his best

That's My Desire

-Artist: Frankie Laine as sung on "Frankie Laine's Greatest Hits"
-Columbia CS 8636
-peak Billboard position # 4 in 1947
-Words and Music by Carroll Loveday and Helmy Kresa

To spend one night with you
In our old rendezvous
And reminisce with you
That's my desire

To meet where gypsies play
Down in that dim caf
And dance till break of day
That's my desire

We'll sip a little glass of wine
And I'll gaze into your eyes divine
I'll feel the touch of your lips
Pressing on mine

To hear you whisper low
Just when it's time to go
"Cheri, I love you so"
"You're my desire"

>instrumental interlude>

To hear you whisper low
Just when it's time to go
"Cheri, I love you so"
"You're my desire"

You're my desire

Ah, the man wi' the big smile, big voice, & blue drape suit at the Empire, glory days. An' ah was knocked out by the previous song too, as in-

Buzz of voices in the smoky nightclub, piano strikes a chord, a single spot lights up – Teeny! You sing a mean “torchsong”, Teeny, the applause is deafening!
And for her encore -

Georgia, Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Georgia,Georgia,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I said just an old sweet song,
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I favorite of mine remember my gran singing this all thetime.

In the Garden(I come to the garden alone)

I come to the garden alone
while the dew is still on the roses,
and the voice I hear falling on my ear,
the son of god discloses.

Refrain: And he walks with me and he talks with me,
and he tells me I am his own:
and the joy we share as we tary there,
none other has ever known.

He speaks and the sound of his voice,
is so sweet the birds hush their singing,
and the melody that he gave to me
within my heart is ringing.
Refrain:

I'd stay in the garden with him,
though the night around me be falling,
but he bids me go;thru the voice of woe
his voice to me is calling. Refrain.

Ol' man river, that ol' man river,
He must know sumpin', but don't say nothin',
He jus' keeps rollin', He keeps on rollin' along.

He don't plant 'taters, he don't plant cotton,
But them that plants 'em is soon forgotten,
But ol' man riv-er, he jus' keeps rollin' along.

Time for more Proclaimers, sorry Melody, I am claiming this back ........lol
a nice little song that questions English rule in Scotland.....

I could tell the meaning of a word like serene
I got some 'o' grades when i was sixteen
I can tell the difference between magarine and butter
I can say "saskatchewan" without starting to stutter

But i can't understand why we let someone else rule our land
We're cap in hand

I could get a broken jaw from being in a fight
I know its evening when day turns to night
I can understand why stranraer lie so lowly
They could save a lot of points by signing hibs goalie

But i can't understand why we let someone else rule our land
We're cap in hand

We fight - when they ask us
We boast - then we cower
We beg
For a piece of
Whats already ours

Once i thought i could make god a bribe
So i said i was in his lost tribe
Getting handouts can be so frustrating
"get in line son, there's five million waiting"

I can't understand why you let someone else rule your land
You're cap in hand.

Here's another plaintive song from granny's day:

He stood in a beautiful mansion,
Surrounded by riches untold,
He gazed at a beautiful picture,
That hung in a frame of gold,
T'was the picture of a lady,
So beautiful, young and fair,
As he looked at that lifelike picture,
He murmured in said despair:

"If those lips could only speak,
If those eyes could only see,
If those beautiful golden tresses,
Were there in reality,
Could I only take your hand,
Like I did when you took my name,
But you're only a beautiful picture,
In a beautiful golden frame".

What a philosophy!!!!
Frankie Laine again

I'm gonna live till I die! I'm gonna laugh 'stead of cry,

I'm gonna take the town and turn it upside down,

I'm gonna live, live, live until I die.

They're gonna say "What a guy!" I'm gonna play for the sky.

Ain't gonna miss a thing, I'm gonna have my fling,

I'm gonna live, live, live until I die.

The blues I lay low, I'll make them stay low,

They'll never trail over my head.

I'll be a devil, till I'm an angel, but until then.

Hallelujah, gonna dance, gonna fly, I'll take a chance riding high,

Before my number's up, I'm gonna fill my cup,

I'm gonna live, live, live, until I die!

The blues I lay low (etc.) .

Jimmy D, get yer dancin' shoes on! Ready for a wee jig? laugh.gif

Here's Abba:

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a King
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance...

You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life

Paddling the wee canoe and giving it big licks

INDIAN LOVE CALL

When I'm calling you - oo-oo-oo ...
Will you answer too - oo-oo-oo ...
That means I offer my love to you, to be your own
If you refuse me I will be blue and waiting all alone
But if when you hear my love call ringing clear
And I hear your answering echo, so dear
Then I will know our love will come true
You belong to me, I'll belong to you biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Glad you like my "melancholy" song thebardau, forever indebted to dad for his love of music.

Now here's the words of that Frankie Laine song I was telling you about earlier "To Each His Own":

A rose must remain with the sun and the rain
Or its lovely promise won't come true
To each his own, to each his own
And my own is you

What good is a song if the words just don't belong?
And a dream must be a dream for two
No good alone, to each his own
For me there's you

If a flame is to grow there must be a glow
To open each door there's a key
I need you, I know, I can't let you go
Your touch means too much to me

Two lips must insist on two more to be kissed
Or they'll never know what love can do
To each his own, I've found my own
One and only you

A beaut from Tommy Edwards ...

Many a tear has to fall
But it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game
That we know as love

You had words with him
And your future's looking dim
But these things your heart can rise above

Once in a while he won't call
But it's all in the game
Soon he'll be there by your side
With a small bouquet

And he'll kiss your lips
And caress your fingertips
And your heart will fly away

You had words with him
And your future's looking dim
But these things your heart can rise above

Once in a while he won't call
But it's all in the game

Soon he'll be there by your side
With a small bouquet

And he'll kiss your lips
And caress your fingertips
And your heart will fly away

Okay, someone was asking for the words to Kay Starr's Wheel of Fortune earlier ... here you go:

The wheel of fortune
Goes spinning around
Will the arrow point my way?
Will this be my day?

Oh, wheel of fortune
Please don't pass me by
Let me know the magic of
A kiss and a sigh

While the wheel is spining, spinning, spinning
I'll not dream of winning fortune or fame
While the wheel is turning, turning, turning
I'll be yearning, yearning
For love's precious flame

Oh, wheel of fortune
I'm hoping somehow
If you ever smile on me
Please let it be now

While the wheel is spining, spinning, spinning
I'll not dream of winning fortune or fame
While the wheel is turning, turning, turning
I'll be yearning, yearning
For love's precious flame

Oh, wheel of fortune
I'm hoping somehow
If you ever smile on me
Please let it be now

And I pictured you doing "They can't take that away from me" in "torch singer" style too. Well, we live & learn - a Frankie Laine song I didn't know, I can now hold my head up again, thanks to you, Teeny! Oh, Wheel of Fortune, I remeber that one being played over & over again on the jukebox at my rellos' cafe way back when.... I seldom see jukeboxes anywhere these days.

Posted by: Teeny 13th Aug 2003, 03:50am

Bard that was the name of the album too "To Each His Own", it's a pity you haven't heard it, really touching with Frankie's one of a kind voice.

I went to a party a couple of years ago and the hosts had hired a jukebox for the evening which I thought was a great idea (especially as you didn't have to feed the bugger, they cost a fortune) and there was something for everyone.

if you would only say you care
An tho my pockets may be empty
I'd be a millionaire
my clothes may still be torn an tattered
but in my heart i'd be a king
your love for me is all that matters
its everything
so open your eyes and you'll open the door
to all the treasures that i'm hopin for
so hold me an kiss me
and say you'll be mine evermore

Here's a great one for the Canadian contigent
Are you listening Rena and Marg?

Out on the Mira on warm afternoons,
Old men go fishing with black line and spoons;
And if they catch nothing they never complain,
And I wish I was with them again.

As boys in the boats call to girls on the shore,
Teasing the ones that they dearly adore;
And into the evening the courting begins,
And I wish I was with them again.

Chorus:
Can you imagine a piece of the universe,
More fit for princes and kings?
I'll trade you ten of your cities for Marion Bridge,
And the pleasure it brings.

Out on the Mira on soft summer nights,
Bonfires blaze to the children's delight;
They dance 'round the flames singing songs with their friends,
And I wish I was with them again.

And over the ashes the stories are told,
Of witches and werewolves and Oak Island gold;
Stars on the river-face sparkle and spin,
I wish I was with them again.

Chorus

Out on the Mira, the people are kind,
They'll treat you to homebrew, and help you unwind;
And if you come broken they'll see that you mend,
I wish I was with them again.

Now I'll conclude with a wish you go well,
Sweet be your dreams, and your happiness swell;
I'll leave you here, for my journey begins,
I'm going to be with them again.
