Here we go again ... Glasgow Life shoves the begging bowl in the public's face to scrounge 10,000, while at the same time the company's bosses hand over a basic salary in excess of 150,000 to Bridget McConnell, chief executive, and wife of the former 'Scottish Labour leader' Baron McConnell of Glenscorrodale.

Shameful! Absolutely shameful!

Once again GG demonstrates a lamentable ignorance of how public museums and art galleries are funded throughout the world. The BBC news article clearly states that the 10000 sought from public subscription is only a percentage of the money to be spent on the redesign of the Life Gallery at Kelvingrove. In addition to the obvious advantages of this type of fund raising it has the additional advantages of engaging the public’s interest and of raising public awareness of the activities being undertaken.

You will find that there is a little more to funding and maintaining public art collections than “shoving a begging bowl in the public’s face to scrounge” funds.

As for the salary paid to Dr Bridget McConnell as Chief Executive of Glasgow Life I think you will find it is comparable to salaries paid to chief executives in the private sector with similar levels of responsibility and is fully commensurate with one who has Dr McConnell’s qualifications, experience and abilities.
