Socialist politician Tommy Sheridan has been found guilty of perjury. The verdict follows an emotional 12-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow at which the former MSP was charged with lying during his successful defamation case against the News of the World four years ago.

Shortly after the verdict, Mr Sheridan's solicitor, Amar Anwar, read out a statement on behalf of his client in which the Pollok-born politician expressed his anger at News International, saying "I make no apologies for taking on the might of [News of the World owner] Rupert Murdoch".

It is not yet known whether the Sunday newspaper plans to appeal the defamation case and recoup the 200,000 it has yet to pay out in damages. The perjury charges were the result of a controversial investigation by Lothian and Borders Police.

Mr Sheridan's wife, Gail, then made a statement of support and thanked the couple's friends. "I have and will always stand by Tommy," she said. The pair then embraced.

Mr Sheridan, who now faces a lengthy custodial jail term, will be sentenced next year. All charges against Mrs Sheridan were dropped last week.

Nothing controversial about this investigation.A straight forward enquiry conducted in a fair and impartial manner. The original trial judge knew there was something seriously wrong and asked the Crown Office to investigate. This isnt a victory for the News of the World but for Scottish Justice which has shown that persons stepping into a witness box and telling lies do so at their own peril.

Well as much as I personally felt that the 'big guns' were out to end the 'Legend of Robin Hood', at all costs...
I feel that Scottish Justice has just been shafted to the tune of 4.5M, in a case where the NOTW and our Police manipulated the legal process and carried out excessive investigations, disregarding many cases of 'bribery and lying', and chased Tommy through his wife, with false charges against her to compile cases that were, when stripped of all the decoration, were down to 2 teams of 'liers' whose opinions cancelled each other out.
Difficult to think of how any jury member felt during this theatrical performance, but the bottom line is this......considering what 'other Councillors and MSP's have been caught with their snouts in the trough....
this entire legal case can only really be seen as.......
A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY....
I don't think it's over yet either, there are major questions still to be asked about most of the witnesses, ( from each side), and the whole can-of-worms that has been opened about the use/abuse of the Legal System huh.gif

I cannot understand what Tommy Sheridan's supporters see in him the man is a proven liar!

He tried the emotional blackmail poor wean will not have me at Christmas Bla bla ... what a waste of space! Crocodile tears etc. Well it did not work he has been found guilty ... thank goodness for justice!

He mentioned his fight against the poll tax that was just a stepping stone onto his bandwagon what a God send for him this so unpopular tax.

He 'suffered for the cause' ... what a week in prison own cell telly and what not ... no hardship there.

He should have been put into prison now not waiting until the end of January, no doubt he will be appealing against his sentence costing the tax payers even more money.

Lock him up and throw away the key please!

As I stated this was not a victory for the News of the World.Their vindication will come very soon at the Court of Session when they appeal the case in which Sheridan was awarded 200.000 as a result of his perjured evidence.
I was interested to see Tommy this evening being interviewed by detectives where he freely admitted to indulging in group sexual activities with more than one partner.A statement straight from his own mouth but not used in the trial.

I wasnt sure how this trial would end
To be honest while justice has to be done ,4.5 million seems a lot of cash for this trial, after all his award for damages was 200,000

I thought he might be found not guilty as charge after charge was dropped
I doubt he will do much time in prison but it will end his days in politics, or will it?
Bye for now, norrie

Norrie123 what the Crown have done in this case is not uncommon in that they will load on many charges which they know they will never be able to prove, however by doing this they also know at the outset that many a defence lawyer will go for a plea bargain ie, dropping for instance a number of charges in return for a guilty plea. This case was an example where they have just chipped away the indictments until they got to the main charges that mattered and that was the most serious.

Don't know about him not spending much time in prison Norrie, they are talking about 6 years being possible.
