Jupiter imagine that that money was there and added to the 100 million that was spent on the new Transport Museum.... imagine what that could have done to bring the beautiful ship home and refurbish it.... you could even have had the new museum inside the great ship!!

Scotsman nothing would give me more pleasure than to see the old lady being brought back up the Clyde.I recall watching her from the boulevard in 68 being taken down river for fitting out but I just dont envision her coming back.

Its not such a pipedream as all that. I understood the position to be that it is part of a huge debt (we might be talking billions). If it were sold off for scrap (to recover whatever they could get for it) then I think 15 million is probably a fair sum.
The bigger problems would be
1) Would it actually MAKE it back, under its own steam? In one piece?
2) It would probably cost at least a million or more for it to get back
3) Substantial infrastructure would likely have to be invested in its 'resting place' Again at considerable cost.
4) It would likely take a very wealthy benefactor/speculator Like Duncan Bannatyne to turn the dream, into a reality.

He could probably sell SAND to the Arabs lol

Go on Duncan - ye'll probably get a statue dedicated tae ye, in George Square - or free fish suppers for life lol (Am a big fan, ever since I read in his book about how he 'accidently' stuck one on the kisser of a pesky officer of the realm (Naval type)

Weedavy,my son who is a navigator has a mate who worked as an engineer on her and the general view was that the engines were well passed their best and that state was reflected through the entire ship.Like every other vessel it had its day and was miles behind in technological terms.Doubtful it would get a cert of seaworthiness now so it will be towed wherever it ends up.My money is on Alang or Shanghai.I hope Im proved wrong but in todays global economic climate I just dont see mega money being put into a floating hotel such as this.
I was just reading that there are moves to restore another famous liner the United States which has been laid up in the US since 1996.

Only entrepreneurs such as Dunc could make it happen, but I think a good investment opportunity all the same. AND he's in the HOTEL game!
If I was asking him to finance it, on Dragons Den, he'd probably say 'which banana boat did ye think ah came in oan, son?')

Doesnt seem that long ago when I had my pic taken standing right at her bow on her very first visit to Los Angeles...it was about 2 am,I happened to be doing ship repairs on the same dock...As far as saving her for the Clyde' no way Jose...The Old Queen Mary here in Long Beach,Ca.just scrapes by financially if the word scrape is the proper word to use...it's had financial troubles for years,yet still open as a hotel and tourist attraction.....(My wife and I were married on her)

Since this ship was built and launched, a lot of water has gone under the bridge (no pun intended) and wages have risen 6 or 7 times what the were in the 60s. Those who worked on the ships would be aware of the cost involved in maintaining a liner in any condition after 20 years of service never mind pristine. Nostalgia is all very well if you are not paying for it. And if you think 15 million saved on the George Square debacle would go any where near just repainting it, a severe reality check is in order.
I am a ship modeller and ex shipyard worker. I love ships of all descriptions, except maybe the characterless crass floating motels that pass for liners today. Can we see a generation that had no exposure to the aesthetics of the liners of our youth and be willing to pay the massive costs involved in the upkeep of them. Some how I can't see that happening.

After reading a report about Dunc's wife taking him to the cleaners, I don't suppose he'll be responding in the near future!

Agree wholheartedly!!...as a lover of ships and spent all my working life shipbuilding and repairing,you're dead on when you mention todays liners!

There are those here who are throwing all sorts of cash numbers around to justify the expence of bringing this ex icon to Glasgow; a million here a few hundred million there. It would be more economical to have a complete live copy of the ship manufactured in China or India than it ever would be trying to restore it.
