I have a vivid memory of being taken to see an "attraction" in West Nile Street during the 50's, which I recall was a building with some lions in it. This would have been across the road from the back of the Odeon or thereabouts. One or two lions in a cage, or cages.

I was only quite small at the time and recall being frightened witless by this.

Did I dream it or was there really a small zoo, of sorts?

Thanks

The only zoo ah remember in the City Centre wis Wilson's in Oswald Street. Ah wis in it as a wean - wance. Ah started greetin an had tae be taken ootside. There wis a lion paradin up an doon a cage - no a very big wan either - wi nae tap oan it. That wis enough fur me - ah didnae fancy bein Leo's din-dins. There wis also a big mastiff dug that patrolled up an doon the aisles, but ah don't think it wid've lasted long if the lion had escaped frae its cage.

Hi Benny
Your bang on about the zoo in Oswald St, was also taken there a few times as a wean it was a manky place I felt sorry for the animals and wanted to take them hame to Keppochill Rd so that they could have more space running about the Haddie Hills

Cheers Tam C

Have many fond memories of Wilsons, met the owner on a few occasions and had my sailors hat stolen by monkeys when I got too near to their cage. I used to run up and down in front of the lions cage on the back wall and Leo would run back and forward with me. I have very vivid, happy memories of this place, and though it would be an unaceptable format today, a zoo smack in the middle of Glasgow well.......

Many thanks for the info - false memory of W Nile Street, obviously, but it was at least 50 years ago. How kind of parents in them days to take their children in and terrify them - was it supposed to be a treat?
