Today's the 700th anniversary of the declaration of Arbroath. thumbup.gif

Although you wouldn't know if you're dependent on our so called national TV channels. unsure.gif

Some not unexpected heated comments going on here folks. I'm quite happy to give my tuppenceworth, but what you WON'T get is personal abuse or insult simply because we disagree. First off, I'd like to give some perspective to my poltical views. I'm an ex member of the labour party, I'm also an ex shop steward in the A U E W. I think that tells you all you need to know about where my heart is.

As for Scottish independence I came at the indy ref more likely to vote no than yes. However, my time in the trade union movement taught me never to enter a debate without doing my research, it only leaves you open to being made to look rather silly if your opponent has done his or hers. I duly switched off from the rhetoric from both sides and read as much as I could get my hands on. Not only did this change me from being a potential no voter, it led me to become an activist in the yes movement.

Hello Ossie

Let me start by saying I appreciate the non controversial tone of your post. You will be made welcome by the stalwarts who voted for Independence AND for remaining in the EU. I am making that comment because I voted for Independence but voted against staying in the EU. So please be aware that if you also want to remain in the EU, you will be okay on this forum. Otherwise don’t be surprised if your attempt to debate in a reasonable manner, is completely ignored.

Until the SNP stops assuming my vote for Independence means I want Scotland to be in the EU, then I will vote against Independence.

My main reason for voting to leave the EU is straightforward. I do not believe in freedom of movement for EU citizens. I have the right to hold that view, but unfortunately on this forum, that makes me a racist by a few of the regular contributors to this forum. I wonder if the citizens throughout the EU will want to retain Freedom of Movement once, and if, the threat of Coronavirus has gone.

Please keep in mind it was not me who made Independence and EU membership, the one issue. Finally, I hope you have found the tone of my post to have been non controversial, or indeed offensive.

Danny

Thanks Danny, nothing whatsoever offensive about your post, so thanks for that. I'm not setting myself up as some latter day Voltaire, but for me the essence of a truly democratic society is one where we are all allowed to voice our opinions without fear of either verbal or physical abuse. As for this whole debate, well, it's for another time. Much to overcome first.

You have a very sensible and compassionate approach!

Well done.

In the days when I still worked I was Branch Secretary of our Union CPSA.
