I was brought up in Garngad, lived there for the first 23 years of my life until I got married.
My local cinemas were the Carlton and The Casino in Castle Street Townhead. Went to the Saturday matinee in the Carlton, I was given 6d admission price and 3d for a bar of Highland Toffee--if my Mother could afford it, I sometimes got 3d for a plain ice at the interval from the girl with the tray
Many times we just went into Hilley's and bought an ice cream cone--I can still taste the lovely ice cream, good memories for me

Jings, where do I start? My Grandma's parents owned a shop on Garngad Hill. My Grandad, Jimmy Thompson, used to help run the St Roch's Guild Football team. My Grandparents were married in St Roch's, as were my parents and my wee sister. My Aunt Mary McGinnis used to play the keyboards during mass on a sunday.
My two Aunt Mary's (McGinnis and Harkin, nee Thompson) and my Grandma worked in the doctors surgery on Royston Rd and the High Street for more years than I can remember.
I went to St Roch's Primary and St Roch's Secondary. I made my First Confession, First Communion and had my confirmation in St Roch's.
Oh father dear and did you hear new houses they have built and some of them in Easterhouse and some in Castlemilk, Balornock and Barmulloch too they’re building them like mad, and now they’re taking our friends away from the dear old Garngad.
Oh Garngad! Oh Garngad! upon you some folk frown, I never thought I would live to see your buildings crumbling down, they may send me up to Drumchapel or the Milton scheme my lad, But they’ll never take away my heart from the dear old Garngad.
Remember Paddy’s Castle and the bowling alley too remember yon blind window where, we used to bill and coo, McGregor’s land and Syme’s land oh don’t it make you sad to think today they’ve passed away from the dear old Garngad
They’re building houses everywhere they’re building them with skill, They’re building them in Carntyne and even in Priesthill, they may send me away to Siberia or even old Baghdad, but they’ll never take my heart away from the dear old Garngad.
On Villers Street and Cobden Street And the good old Rosemount Pawn, They’re all knocked down But on that ground skyscrapers now adorn, Yet still there’s one thing that keeps bothering me Oh how I get so mad, For they’ve changed the name to Royston now Instead of Garngad.

Your Aunt Mary Thomson, has she a sister Kathleen? if so I know who they are. I also attended both St Roch's primary and secondary schools and got married in St Roch's Church. This is their Centerary year for both Church and primary school
Haven't been back for many, many years but of course it's all different now.

I was born in Bright St off the Royston Road in 1932. My mother was known as big Isa Brannan and my Father was John Brannan. I have a sister Betty and my brother John was killed during the war. I went to St Roch's and then later worked on the busses then the trams. I would love to hear from anyone who was around in those days. Kathleen Brannan

Hello Kathleen,
I have just noticed your post. I knew Bright Street very well. My gran lived in Villiers Street. I was in Rhymer Street. You are a wee bit older than me so would have been at St Roch's primary before me. I'm trying to think of anyone who lived in your street was maybe in my class at school, will get back to you if I do remember.

Hi,i lived in Villiers St till the age of 7 then moved up the road to Stronsay St, Germiston. stayed there till i came to the states in '67. The Garngad was a great place to grow up in the people were the best. I went to St Roch's primary school and then to St Roch's secondary school. Used to work in the Royston Rd Post Office and loved all the characters that came in, never a dull moment all we did was laugh. Sweet Memories, Liz.

I was born in Blackhill were i stayed until i was a few weeks old (cannae remember). We then moved to Rosemount street and stayed in the high flats at the shops, number 20. I went to the wee roch as did my 2 younger brothers and all 3 of us were alter servers in St Roch's church. I have fond memories of that time.
The garngad was a great place to grow up. My dad worked in the 'hibs hall' officially known as the 'Royston Social Club' owned by the chapel and i have great memories of there as well.
My dad played football for the boys guild which was run by my grandfather 'cokey' (Robert Leese). I have a few short memories of him. I also played for the boys guild, the primary, secondary and junior football teams of St Rochs.
I got married and stayed in Charles St, we split and i moved to Paisley and now stay in a great wee town in Nth Ayrshire called Beith.
I had a great childhood in the garngad and had some fantastic mates. If any of you are out there or know or remember me then please get in touch, it would be nice.

Hello John,
Did you by any chance have relatives who lived in Rhymer Street? I knew a family called Leese. John--who may well be your father because he worked in the Hibs Hall, Thomas (Toshie) and Dick--he married a girl from Gadshill Street-- May Stevenson,
I also remember my parents calling Mr Leese senior Cokey--got to be the same family
Nice to see others posting here, hello Celtchic67. There is another thread about Garngad too, My Garngad Family it's called on Memories section

My 3 old aunts owned the general store on the corner of Gadshill Street and Garngad Rd from 1930's to the 50's. They were Katie, Mary and Lizzie Carrigan. Any information about them/the shop please.
